Pantodude
At least 20 of the 2019-2020 Overstreet top 50 SA keys are DC! Come on, folks. Be nice. But I wonder how much that has (or should have) changed by now, at least the rankings if not the members of the top 50. Edited September 24, 2021 by Pantodude Terry E. I am pretty confident that the books appearing multiple times on this list qualify as keys, at minimum (as well as books like Batman 181, which I had in my list but may not have appeared on others' top 10). Popular Post bronze johnny
DC Silver Age Top 10 keys: Showcase 4 - In most cases, the DC keys are not to be taken by themselves unlike their Marvel counterparts. Showcase 4 is one example that proves this. Showcase 4 is the first appearance of a new Flash and if taken on its own, is a Silver Age key but Flash 105 has a significant role is defining Showcase 4. They are directly connected to one another with Flash 105’s success contributing to Showcase 4’s. The guys that collect books in hope of movies or Disney pushing characters are never going to get this and how significant the history of these comics are and how they are truly defined inside their medium. Showcase 22 - Where would DC be without the Green Lantern? Where would comic books be without the Green Lantern? Green Lantern 1 has the same connection to SC 22 that SC 4 has to Flash 105. Like other books on this list, SC 22 is extremely tough to find in nice condition that also presents very well. Our Army at War 83 - The Action Comics 1 of the War Genre. Rock is both the greatest war and anti war hero in comic book history! This book as the war key is relatively new in the minds of the current generation of collectors. 83 is also the scarcest Silver Age key. This book has no movie hype and continues to hold its own- proving in this case that it’s the collectors who know this hobby deciding what’s a major Silver Age key. Brave and the Bold 28 - It’s not about the Starfish! Bats, Supes and Wonder Woman are the anchor. Golden Age continuity is in one sense, the core of an expanding DC Silver Age. BB 28 is the best representation of building on the best of DC’s Golden Age (Bats, Supes, & Wonder Woman) and this expansion. Adventure Comics 247 - The once most valuable Silver Age key may one day again be at the top. Relative scarcity makes this another tough book to find in nice condition. Action Comics 252 - The first appearance of the greatest female superhero. Showcase 17 - Adam Strange is the center of the Silver Age of Sci-Fi genre. Gil Kane’s classic cover shows comic book readers that the greatest Sci Fi art they saw in Planet Comics and Famous Funnies wasn’t exclusive to the Golden and Atomic Ages. Flash 105 - a major key doesn’t always have to be a first appearance and this book starts the first successful Silver Age auperhero run outside of the Superman-Batman-Wonder Woman titles. Justice League of America 1 - At the time this book hit the stands, DC was playing chess while Atlas (soon to be Marvel) was playing checkers. No disputing how significant this run was to DC and the entire Silver Age along with the decades that followed. BB 28’s success is connected to JLA 1 and what followed. Back then, the true measure of a successful superhero or superhero team was the success of the run that followed. This holds true for true collectors who know the history of this hobby and while watching the speculator hype and attempts to exploit the mere appearance of a character on the latest pair of men’s underwear, avoid falling for the baloney that misinformed and lesser informed people (sadly) do. Fools gold has its place. Showcase 6 - Kirby’s Challies were the first original Silver Age concept and a significant part of the foundation for the Marvel Age that started with the Fantastic Four. A very tough book to find in nice shape that also blends the late 50s Sci-Fi with heroes that Irwin Allen may have taken notice of when he gave us Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Special Mention: My Greatest Adventure 80 - DC’s strangest comic book heroes came out just prior to the X-Men and represent distinct place in the Silver Age. The Doom Patrol is still evolving… House of Secrets 1 - This book would later have its own version of Giant-Size X-Men 1 with issue 81 that along with House of Mystery 174, revamped the horror mystery format during the late Silver Age. This title is noted for House of Secrets 92 that gave us the Swamp Thing. Wrightson, Adams, Kakita, Morrow, Sprarling, Cardy, and Dominguez produced the greatest artwork not seen in the horror genre since the Precode era. The horror-mystery format is still with us today thanks to books like House of Secrets. -john Edited September 25, 2021 by bronze johnny PopKulture, IngelsFan, Sweet Lou 14 and 5 others 5
Pantodude
I would put BB28 higher, like after only SC4. This is DC, who didn't take of their business as well as Marvel vis-a-vis the team phenomenon, but we cannot forget that Marvel's super-successful team-based MCU the past almost 20 years a la Avengers (and soon FF and X-Men, too) is all b/c of DC's BB28 (which Marvel's folks admitted was the impetus for FF, right?). Whether you are a DC or Marvel fan, one cannot deny the historic significance of BB28 for the two leading comic book franchises of all time. BB28 is way, way undervalued today, but be that as it may, it should not also suffer the indignity of a lower ranking in terms of "key" status. And come on. Starro! 'Nuff said. Terry E.
