At Oadby, the fleet was looked after by an ex-copper called Tom Goodacre who also rode shotgun on the wages van.  Given that the wages were all paid in cash, 'rode shotgun' is quite possibly not a metaphor.

Brilliant

One more spelling mistake and Goodacre would've taken Goodcare of any marauders I'm sure.

You're in the 30's there, matey.  That's the book van from which Fred ran his mobile library.

How do you know that! It's like you were there or something.....

I went cross-eyed looking for these the other week. 79 and 94 start to play tricks on you in the end, and you think you can see the stamp in the brickwork, the Prowler's cloak, your breakfast.....

I know. And you never hallucinate the entire stamp.  You start thinking you can see a vague partial roundey shape and then try to make your eyes find the rest of it. My hat is still off to Kevin J for this one.

That one was impressive, yes. Especially in view of Kev being a hundred and eighty years old and blind as a bat @Kevin.J  Magoo.gif.831d5c83cf9be3ebeb301e8cb5ebe6ad.gif

Oh.

Actually, given this demonstration of your artistic skills with window displays, you might want to apply for this.

BTW, the lady who ran the canteen was called Mrs. Kettle.  I swear I am not making that up.

Was her friend called Potts? Please say yes.

Some clues as to the ownership of the numbered T&Pesque 'diamond' stamp....?

(No 'Rod' jokes please. Or Jane and Freddy. Or Dyno. Or Stewart. Or Fishing)

A regular, round 1/6 T&P stamp on this copy....

This one's sticker might be a shop, I suppose.

In a previous life I had a shop. You had to buy stock from a wholesaler. The wholesaler had to buy stuff from the manufacturer. Both of us needed to make a profit. The customer had to feel they were getting a good deal too. So some things you could make a better margin on than others.

When Len Miller had comics displaying 6d that was the price the end customer paid. What price did Len sell the comics to the Newsagent at? What price did Len pay for them himself? Tuppence each?  And even  if Len delivered the comics by horse and cart there were still feed and stables to pay for. The mind boggles that Len could have received his monthly bundles of Archie comics for just a few quid.

Perhaps Thorpe and Porter initially imported comics not to make lots of money but as a smokescreen. As a way in to Newsagents to offer them comics but also the far more lucrative pornography.  What was the profit margin on a 1/- comic compared with a 5/- magazine. No contest really.

Indeed. We focus on the comics of course, but T&P stamps are all over magazines and, as you say, they were likely more lucrative. Looks at all the different pies they had a finger in:

I gave up organising them a while ago.

What shop did you run, Robot?

I was just updating some of my plotting tables, and noticed a big gap between these two:

209208484_1960.05HeartThrobs65Stamp3(1).jpeg.4422fa73d65f4085fbcebf32cdd6bb43.jpeg   Capture.PNG.39c27dbd91f469cc65122852d504eb0f.PNG898842324_1960.05HeartThrobs65Stamp9(1).jpg.776d66869bc75fd43c504d607886b33e.jpg

I plotted both in the second use of the stamp, as if the 9 numbered copy was a 9 of the first use, it would stand out like a sore thumb. So it was probably a latecomer. If you know what I mean (I'm not sure I do anymore).
