Yes, issue #10 (Danny is right - this one is indeed special).  I remember when Roy (Vintage Comics)posted about a number of books that he had come across back in November 2018 - among them this particular book.  I pm'd him at the time and tried to make a deal on it, but the sellers wanted to go to auction with the book to see if they could get a better return.  It was an entire year before the book hit Heritage and in the end I paid slightly more than I had offered (due to HA's buyer premium) and the sellers would've net slightly less at their end as well.  Not that I blame them - sometimes 2 bidders will really drive up the cost of a book - you just never know.  That November 2019 auction had a lot of good B&B's - more than I could afford to go after, that much is sure.

So with all that being said, here is the book - it is the highest graded copy of any book in the first 22 issues (it takes until B&B#23 for another graded copy to equal this book's 9.4 and until B&B#28-the holy grail of the run-for a book to grade higher at 9.6):

That is a stunning copy!! You have some beautiful B&B, my friend. (worship)

I too loved his work, both GA and SA.  Just curious if he was open and freely talked about his past work when you were with him?

Irv had never attended a fan convention prior to that San Diego Con so was he overwhelmed and quite touched by the experience.  He was a modest guy who indicated that he, like many of his generation, was aiming for greater prestige of a newspaper strip or the fine arts and the comic book work "paid the bills".

He was very easy to talk to.  Even during his comic book days he would paint for his own enjoyment on the weekends. I have never seen one of the pictures but I am curious.

He was a good friend of Robert Kanigher (perhaps Kanigher's only?) and Kanigher spoke highly of him in one or two interviews that he did.

I can’t say I’m familiar with his work outside of Brave and the Bold, but I loved his work on this title.

He started as out drawing the Shield for MLJ and then had a long career drawing DC war covers and stories but was most widely known for his work on Batman and Joker in the 1970s.

Me too.

One of the highlights of my Convention experience was to escort Mr & Mrs Irv Novak to a dinner in their honor.  I was pleased to be able to say "thank you" to the artist of one of my favorite series, especially when I knew that was unlikely that anyone was going to point out this particular part of his distinguished career.

I wonder if he's related to Irv Novick? :baiting:

Brave and the Bold #11, Toth copy. Got this one back in the day when the Toth books were being auctioned off on Heritage. I have a few books from that collection, mostly on Superman titles. These are super nice books that are fresh and supple. I long ago freed this one from it’s slab. Interestingly I am aware of two high grade pre-hero B&B collections that are missing this issue. I don’t know if it’s harder to get than other issues I just know I’m glad I dont have to bid against either of them when the next one comes up for sale! 😂

I do not own a #12, one of two issues I’m missing...Brad...you’re up 👍

That is a NICE copy of #11.  Yeah, I don't know what's up with that particular issue, but if you didn't include my collection in your statement above, then there are 3 HG collections that don't have this book.  I guess I've just been waiting for a book like yours (nudge, nudge).  It's too bad the Toths aren't mentioned as such on the slabs.

Here is my #12, acquired in my summer of 2018 big purchase.  It is tied for highest graded on the census with 1 other at 9.0.

Your collection was included in the two I knew of :foryou:

I really like the Robin Hood covers, I think they were much better on Brave and the Bold than the ones in his own short lived DC series. I always thought if I ever saw any high grade copies of the series I would like to get a few but I cant recall ever seeing nice copies.

While I don't have all the issues from 1-200, I have managed to accumulate quite a few thus far.  Here are my copies for issues 1-3.  I have to echo Silver's comment on #2 - it is very hard to find in high grade. Well, I suppose that pretty much goes for all the pre-Suicide Squad issues.

mmmm #1 has been on my want list for being another 1st appearance of Hawkman...technically...but I really like the cover for #3 I think I'll it to the ever growing list :D

For many years I thought B&B #1 was an uncommon or even scarce book. Now I see nice copies of at regularly at conventions (usually 7.0). It’s probably scarce 8.0 or above that but vey findable (if not affordable) otherwise. Now 2-24 are another story (with a couple of exceptions) 😂

8.0 is the highest graded in the CGC Census for a BB #1 and sits at one lone copy! (JLA Brad's 7.5 is next and his is the only copy in the Census at 7.5)

BB #2 shows 4 copies at 7.0 and none higher.

Follows a pattern of second issues or appearances of 10 cent 1950s DCs being truly rare in grade!

Brave and the Bold 13. I plan to do a crossover grade on it so I can add it to my registry set. It’s a nice looking copy. I found this issue to be a littler tougher to locate but I cannot say if it is tougher to find than any other issue. I personally like the Silent Knight covers only slightly more than the Viking Prince ones, but only barely.

Nice copy!  Mine is no better at a CGC 7.0...and I would agree that it seems to be one of the tougher gets in the first 24.

Just to keep this thread rolling, I'll jump right in to last book we left off on which is number 15. I had a pretty bad copy of this for many years that I got as a kid in the mid-70s. It was my first and only pre-hero issue. This copy is a raw fine and one that I'd like to upgrade if the right copy ever comes along.

I don’t know why this thread petered out, both Brad and I have nice copies of many of the issues. I just scored this one, and guess what? It completes my Brave and the Bold run of 1 - 200 complete. I have a knack for leaving the best for last:

Wow!  OW/W is rare for BB28, even in the higher grades.  Congrats!

It’s what drew me to the book. This book is notorious for dull cover colors and cr/ow pages.
