There are a couple more with the "display until 12/10/2013" notes, so there may be a "tie" for the final Marvel newsstand book(s), if it isn't a single book with a date after 12/10/2013.

I did a little bit of research on this at the time @valiantman and then forgot about it.

Using Mike's Comic Newsstand's cover date list for December 2013, I populated the following table by gathering images from online:

dec13.PNG.29e0127d7c9df14bbcf6f8f4188ffe99.PNG

All the above books have December 2013 indicias I believe but five different 'Display Until Dates'. The latest ones - 12/10/2013 - are theoretically the final Marvel newsstands and I've found six so far (at the bottom of the table).

These are the other books that could have a December 2013 newsstand copy but for which I haven't found a copy of yet:

  • Captain America: Living Legend #2
  • Cataclysm #0.1
  • Daredevil #32
  • Daredevil: Dark Nights #5
  • Deadpool #18
  • Deadpool Kills Deadpool #4
  • Fantomex Max #1
  • Fearless Defenders #10
  • Hunger #4
  • Indestructible Hulk #15
  • Infinity #5
  • Infinity: Heist #2
  • Infinity: The Hunt #3
  • Kick- 3 #4
  • Marvel Universe Hulk: Agents of S.M.A.S.H. #1
  • Marvel Universe: Ultimate Spider-Man #1
  • Marvel: Now What #1
  • Mighty Avengers #2
  • New Avengers #11
  • Painkiller Jane: Price of Freedom #2
  • Punisher: The Trial of the Punisher #2
  • Superior Carnage #4
  • Superior Foes of Spider-Man #4
  • Thor and the Mighty Avengers #1
  • Thor: God of Thunder #14
  • Thor: God of Thunder Halloween Comicfest #1
  • Ultimate Comics X-Men #32
  • Ultimate Comics X-Men #33
  • Uncanny Avengers #13
  • Uncanny X-Force #13
  • Uncanny X-Men #13
  • Venom #42
  • Wolverine #10
  • Wolverine & the X-Men #37
  • Wolverine Max #12
  • X-Men Legacy #18
  • X-Men: Battle of the Atom #2
  • Young Avengers #11

Some of them may join the final group. I'll keep an eye out occasionally and see if I can fill the table over time.

In the meantime, these six at least are in the running for joint 'last ever Marvel newsstand' (click to enlarge) if the 'on sale date' is indeed the determining factor:

I've added them to the table - I'll sort it alphabetically at some point:

I think we can conclude that Avengers: A.I. #5 wasn't the "last ever Marvel newsstand" because the back cover matches earlier Marvel books, and isn't the same as the other five with 12/10/2013 on the front cover. (thumbsu

Good spot.

Silly question probably, it's been one of those days, but why do you think Superior Spider-Man Team-Up Special #1 has an annual issue barcode number of 12 instead of 01 as it should have being the only issue of the title that year?

Thor Crown of Fools #1 is 01:

Actually, I wonder if that's the month code.  All of the others are 12... but Thor: Crown of Fools #1 is 01... January 2014?

If that's the case, then we could be looking at the clear answer for which book is the "last ever Marvel newsstand".

That was my first thought VM, but then I thought that the two digit number indicated the number of issues of the title in question registered for the year. So it would be an 01 for Thor, as it would be the first issue registered in the calendar year. The same should apply for the Superior Special though as that is also the first issue of that specific 'special' title. Maybe they attributed it to the existing Superior Team-Up ongoing title and the special was the 12th issue registered?

Who's the newsstand barcode numbers expert around here?

I think we have to use the "title" that the newsstand system assigned to be sure we're understanding the code.  In the case of Thor, the title is Fantastic Four. If there were no Fantastic Four releases in 2013, the 01 could definitely indicate the first issue of the title in 2013.  I see on Comichron.com that there were Fantastic Four issues in 2013, so that 01 seems like it might (again) be related to the counter for 2014.  The Superior Team-Up Special is titled "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man" in the barcode box - so that's likely the 12th issue in 2013.

EDIT:  The newsstand boxes for Fantastic Four in 2013 say "Fantastic Four" but the newsstand box on Thor says "Fantastic Four Double / Marvel Cosmic B" - so it would definitely seem like Marvel is reusing some older title and it may be the 1st issue of that title (in newsstands) in 2013.

Got ya. Do we know why a different title was used by the way, as opposed to the actual title of the publication?

It's my understanding that the newsstand system was not the easiest to make changes - either because it meant that distributors would be hesitant to add new titles (given limited shelf space) or because it was a pain to go through all the required steps to add a new title in the system (or both).  At any rate, Marvel selected which books would be printed as newsstands and applied the most appropriate title within the newsstand system.  The Spider-Man titles being their "biggest sellers" would be established in the newsstand system under different existing Spider titles, but Thor probably only had one newsstand title code.  God of Thunder would have already used the newsstand Thor code in 2013, so they likely needed to find some other (unused) newsstand system title for Crown of Fools.  That's probably where Fantastic Four / Marvel Cosmic B was available, and they only needed to use it once (killing off newsstands altogether the next month).

Interestingly enough, Ultimate Fallout #4 has a newsstand title of "Black Panther" since I guess Marvel didn't bother putting Ultimate Fallout into the newsstand system either for just 6 issues.

I love all those operational quirks. Good job we have the internet now. If that happened in the 1960's we'd all be here now trying to work out why...

Update on an earlier comment on a different thread I can't find. The subject is pertinent here though, so this is where it will go. A little while ago I mentioned a $3,000 sale of a 2008 Incredible Hulk #1 in 9.8 condition. I was asked where the sale happened because the poster didn't see it on eBay. At the time, I had heard about it from two separate people. The first was a dealer at a tiny outdoor comic book convention. The other was a dealer in the town of Hyde Park, who runs a shop called "Alterniverse" (a great little shop btw). Today, I asked the owner of Alterniverse for his source on the Hulk sale. He said it was a private sale between a friend of his and someone else. That's all I know about this.
