Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead” world is getting a lot bigger, with an untitled film prequel and an anime series in development at Netflix.

“I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to partner with Netflix again as we expand the ‘Army of the Dead’ universe with both an international prequel, as well as exploring the visually dynamic world of animation,” Snyder said in a statement Thursday. “It’s been a great collaboration and we are thrilled that Netflix sees this as big of an IP as we do.”

Snyder’s “Army of the Dead” stars Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Ana De La Reguera, Theo Rossi, Huma Qureshi, Omari Hardwick, Tig Notaro, Hiroyuki Sanada, Garret Dillahunt, Matthias Schweighöfer, Raúl Castillo, Nora Arnezeder and Samantha Win. It’s produced by The Stone Quarry’s Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder and Wesley Coller. The film will be released on Netflix in 2021 and follows a group of mercenaries into a zombie-infested Las Vegas as they try to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.

Shay Hatten, one of the writers of the screenplay for “Army of the Dead,” will write the prequel as well as the anime series.

The prequel will be directed by and star Schweighöfer and will follow his Ludwig Dieter character from “Army of the Dead.” The film will be produced by the Snyders and Coller of The Stone Quarry along with Schweighöfer and Dan Maag of Pantaleon Films.

Schweighöfer said, “It has already been a great pleasure to be part of this wonderful ensemble around Zack Synder — a fascinating project. I am happy that it is now being developed on so many different levels.”

The anime series, “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas,” will chronicle the origin story of Bautista’s character and his rescue crew during the initial fall of Vegas as they confront the mysterious source of the zombie outbreak. Zack Snyder will direct two episodes of the series.

Jay Oliva (“Batman: The Dark Knight Returns”) will be showrunning as well as directing two episodes of the series. The series will be executive produced by the Snyders and Coller from The Stone Quarry alongside Olivia and Hatten. Bautista, De la Reguera, Notaro, Hardwick and Purnell will reprise their roles in the anime.

Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead” anime series at Netflix has added 11 more names to its voice cast, including Joe Manganiello, Christian Slater and Vanessa Hudgens, the streaming service said Thursday.

The spinoff show, titled “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas,” will serve as a prequel to Snyder’s upcoming zombie action-heist film “Army of the Dead,” which stars Dave Bautista, Ana De La Reguera, Tig Notaro, Omari Hardwick and Ella Purnell. The film is expected to launch on Netflix in 2021.

Here’s the official description for the show: “The anime series chronicles the origin story of Scott (Dave Bautista) and his rescue crew during the initial fall of Vegas as they confront the mysterious source of the zombie outbreak.”

Here's Everything We Know About the Army of the Dead Sequels and Spin-Offs

Quote

17 years after the fast-paced zombie awesomeness of his Dawn of the Dead remake, director Zack Snyder has made his grand return to the genre of the unliving with Netflix's Army of the Dead. And if 2 hours and 28 minutes of zombie heist magic wasn't enough for you, there's good news: more zombies are on the way. Army of the Dead has at least two spin-offs coming—one film and one TV series.

Army of Thieves

Army of Thieves is a prequel spin-off of Army of the Dead that will focus on the German master code-breaker Ludwig Dieter, played by Matthias Schweighöfer (who is also the director!). Shay Hatten, who wrote John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum and co-wrote Army of the Dead also returned to write the screenplay.

The movie—definitively a prequel, because, well, you saw what happened to Dieter once he cracked the safe open in Army of the Dead—will focus on Dieter during the early days of the Zombie outbreak.

"We just wrapped on Army of Thieves," Snyder said in that same recent Q+A. The movie will show Dieter's backstory, "and how he fell in love with and got obsessed with cracking safes. And why the safe in [Army of the Dead] is significant to him, which it is." The movie is planned to hit Netflix in 2022.

Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas

Next up in this burgeoning universe is Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, which is described as an Anime-inspired prequel series. The series is said to tell Scott's (Dave Bautista) origin story, and several other key actors from the film (Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera, Tig Notaro, and Omari Hardwick) will also reprise their roles.

Joe Manganiello, playing a new character named Rose, will be the show's protagonist; other new names joining the cast include Christian Slater, Vanessa Hudgens, Harry Lenix, Ross Butler, and Jena Malone.

Snyder also said in the recent Q+A that the Lost Vegas prequel series "tells the story of where the zombies came from and what their deal is," and we assume that means more than just what we see in Army of the Dead's thrilling opening moments.

"It goes to Area 51 and does a whole a bunch of psychedelic craziness, which is cool," he continued. "Let's just say it scales in a way that's unexpected as far where the zombies come from."

Army of the Dead 2 (?)

There's zero evidence that this is happening just yet—but let's just spitball for a little. If you saw the end of Army of the Dead, there's one clear takeaway: this outbreak is about to get worse. One of the good guys, Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick), made it out of the Vegas containment zone and now has a whole lot of money. What's he going to do with that money? Well, he's going to use it to bribe flight attendants to take the first privately owned jet out of town. And then we see the big reveal: he's been bitten. Good guy no more.

That leaves us with a few options. If Army of the Dead is as massive of a streaming hit as Netflix seems to expect it will be, there could be outcry for a sequel. And clearly this ending shows us that a big outbreak would make narrative sense. Then again, Zack Snyder's last zombie movie, 2004's Dawn of the Dead ended on a similarly grim note, and sort of just left everyone hanging for the rest of time to figure out on their own.

Digital Dimension Entertainment Group (DDEG) and Lex+Otis have formed a joint venture studio, KRAKN Animation.

The facility, with locations in Montreal and Los Angeles, will be co-owned by Louis-Simon Menard, CEO and president of DDEG, and Jay Oliva, founder and CEO of Lex+Otis. KRAKN Animation will offer preproduction and animation services for high-end 3D series and features.

“Our mutual passion for immersive and engaging storytelling, and desire for doing things differently is what unites us,” Menard said in a statement about the decision to jointly launch an integrated animation studio. Digital Dimension’s Meduzarts Animation studio has been collaborating with Oliva and The Stone Quarry Animation on Netflix’s Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas.

The series, to star Joe Manganiello, Dave Bautista, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Christian Slater and Ella Purnell, is a prequel to Zack Snyder’s original zombie heist action film Army of the Dead, a franchise kickoff for Netflix.

Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas is executive produced by Deborah Snyder, Zack Snyder, Wesley Coller, Jay Oliva and Shay Hatten. Digital Dimension and Lex+Otis are also collaborating on Snyder’s recently announced animated TV series for Netflix, Twilight of the Gods.

Zack Snyder's most recent hit Army of the Dead will receive an anime spinoff that is set to air in early 2022. Army of the Dead hit Netflix in May 2021. The film was an over-the-top zombie heist that cleverly touched on themes of quarantine and infection, made relevant by the recent coronavirus pandemic. Snyder ensured fans that there will be more Army of the Dead content to come.

THR confirms that the Army of the Dead anime will arrive in Spring 2022. The spinoff series will be titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. It will also be available for streaming on Netflix just like its predecessor Army of the Dead. This means the anime may be available for streaming less than a year after the original.
