Amazon’s superhero series The Boys is getting a spinoff set in superhero college.

 

The project, written by The Boys executive producer Craig Rosenberg, had been in the works for awhile. It is being fast-tracked in light of the success of the original series’ second season which marked the most-watched global launch of an Amazon Original series ever. The Boys’ first season already had set a high viewership mark for Amazon when it debuted in summer 2019. In its first two weeks, Season 2 has nearly doubled the Season 1 worldwide audience (+89%), drawing millions of new viewers each week.

 

Set at America’s only college exclusively for young adult superheroes (and run by Vought International), the Untitled Boys Spinoff is described as an irreverent, R-rated series that explores the lives of hormonal, competitive Supes as they put their physical, sexual, and moral boundaries to the test, competing for the best contracts in the best cities. Part college show, part Hunger Games — with all the heart, satire and raunch of The Boys.

 

The spinoff is from the entities behind the original series — Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television in association with Point Grey Pictures, Kripke Enterprises and Original Film.

 

Rosenberg is writing the pilot and will serve as executive producer/showrunner on the spinoff under his overall deal with Sony Pictures TV. The Boys developer/executive producer Eric Kripke and fellow The Boys EPs, Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and James Weaver; and Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty, also executive produce.

Last week brought the surprise news that Amazon Prime Video is doubling down on their adaptation of The Boys and are developing a spinoff series. Though not focusing on the titular "boys" or even The Seven, the new series is set at a Vought International college exclusively for young adult superheroes. Hailing from EP Craig Rosenberg, the series is described as part college show and part The Hunger Games and also reportedly maintain the "heart, satire, and raunchiness" of the flagship series. Though the show is mostly a new creation, The Boys creator Eric Kripke has revealed what part of the comic series they'll be drawing their inspiration from when they start working on it.

 

"I would say it’s loosely inspired by an element of the comics, which is the G-Men. Part of the G-Men is there’s sort of an educational, college experience,” Kripke said while speaking with TheWrap. “And we just used that as a jumping-off point, kind of similar to ‘The Boys,’ where we sort of take an initial notion and then we are going to run with it in our own weird direction.”

 

For those not familiar with the comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the G-Men were a parody of Marvel's X-Men featured in the series. Described as "the world's most profitable superheroes" for Vought in the comics, the parody of the various teams and characters appear at an almost 1:1 ratio with various teams like "G-Force, The G-Brits, The G-Nomads, G-Coast, G-Style and G-Wiz." To Kripke's point about this storyarc having "sort of an educational, college experience," the cover for The Boys #24 is a parody of famous college movie Animal House with the various G-Men featured.

 

The Professor X like character from the comics is a wealthy and powerful man named John Godolkin, who it's revealed kidnaps children while young and injects them with Compound V to create his teams. Other characters that appear as part of the G-Men that are clear parodies of the X-Men includes Five-Oh (Cyclops), Nubia (Storm), Critter (Beast), Cold Snap (iceman), and even their own Wolverine parody in Groundhawk (complete with sledgehammers for hands).

 

Kripke also opened up about how the show was conceived, but confirmed that there's not an intention by the executive producers to develop countless spinoffs and off-shoots.

 

“We were just talking and we stumbled onto this idea and we were so excited about it, we took it to Amazon," Kripke added. "Because we think there’s a real opportunity to see another part of the Vought world. But probably, more importantly, to make a show that isn’t really made that often, which is what we love about it, which is, as ‘The Boys’ is an unflinching look at reality, the goal for this is to make this superhero show one of the most realistic college shows anyone’s made. And really deal with real college issues and really explore what it’s like to be that age.”

Showrunner Eric Kripke talked about the idea for the spin-off and how it came to be:

Marie Moreau
Marie is an 18-year-old Black woman. She’s described as motivated and bold. According to her description, she’s determined to prove that “a little Black girl from the Caribbean can grow up to become one of the world’s greatest superheroes”. Marie is very proud of her country and it seems that her family’s “financial future” is currently weighing on her shoulders. According to the Illuminerdi, Marie will find herself in a position compromising her values in order to “achieve the American dream”. Marie is the lead character in this spin-off series.

 

Emma
Now let’s meet Emma. Emma is 18-years-old and from Malibu. She’s “sweet, devoted, compassionate, and lovably neurotic bordering on pathological. Emma would give you the shoes off her feet is you ask and then apologize that they’re a little scuffed”. Emma’s mother is a well-known Supe. While Emma is looking forward to beginning college, she has a dark secret she’s hiding that she’s worried will repulse others.

 

Jordan Lee
An 18-year-old asian American woman who joins the Supes college with her twin brother Mark. Jordan is described as: “Jordan is a pan-sexual hedonist superhero always looking to get drunk, get laid, or get high. Underneath her partying persona Jordan is sensitive and an unquestionably talented Supe who buries her fear of failure in her partying and bingeing of alcohol, sex, and drugs.”

 

Mark Lee
The 18-year-old twin to Jordan. Mark falls for a fellow Supe early on, who challenges Mark to stop being lazy and work hard. Apparently, Mark who have to: “Choose between his own newly discovered aspirations and his love for the woman who fostered them. Mark is described as a lead and series regular in The Boys Spin-off.

 

Britney
Britney is in her early twenties. She’s the former teen star of a musical television show “Britney Out Loud” – which was a hit show on Vought+. Clearly a playful jab at all of the streaming services that love to throw a “+” in their name. A shocking drug scandal ruined Britney’s career seven years ago. Once a star, Britney is relying on her $4 cameos and Only Fans page to keep her afloat. Britney devises a plan to get admission into the Supe college. But, she’s haunted by her past and will have to determine whether or not the price of fame is worth it.

 

Polarity
Andre aka Polarity is a 19-year-old Black sophomore at college. Polarity has the: “Rockstar swagger, quick wit, and a swoon-worthy smile. While he can be described as a cocky “f**kboy” he is also at his core a principled guy with “the heart of a hero”. Ferociously loyal, to a fault at times, Polarity has unyielding and fierce grit, born of personal hardship and bolstered by his father, a former B-grade Supe now Polarity’s coach, mentor, and best friend.”

 

Golden Boy
Golden Boy is 22-years-old and is described as charismatic. He is often seen as the “next famous Supe of the Vought pantheon”. Despite this, Golden is described as “trustworthy” and humble. The spin-off show is meant to be an eight-episode season, developed by Eric Kripke. We went through a lot of details just now. Are you looking forward to this spin-off show?

Now they just need to add a third show centred on Solider Boy, Stormfront and all of the older supes set in era.  The "historical" show could be used to set plotlines in motion for The Boys and Varsity.

Described as an X-Men-inspired, Hunger Games-meets-Euphoria YA drama, Gen V focuses on the lives of aspiring young supes training to follow in the footsteps of their role models at the Godolkin University School of Crimefighting. This means it hasn't yet been clear how the spinoff series will connect to the flagship show, or if it intends to at all. Production on Gen V has been underway since May, and now some details about the show are beginning to emerge.

 

Social media user JT has shared new set photos from Gen V. They feature some Boys Easter eggs, teasing how the original series is connected to the spinoff show. A neighborhood has been papered over with posters from A-Train's (Jessie T. Usher) Pepsi commercial parody, as well as promotional images from Victoria Neuman's (Claudia Doumit) vice presidential campaign. There's also some telling graffiti over the Neuman ads, with "Supes Lives Matter" and "Neuman Is A Cop" over multiple.
