Twice a year, steegerbooks has a huge sale.  From Altus Press comes the epic 14 issue pulp classic, “The Purple Invasion.”  I read all the issues and found the Jimmy Christopher stories, kind of meh.  I am more of a Spider, Doc Savage, and Shadow fan.  My good friend told me, “the only taste you have is in your mouth, and even that’s bad.”

In my pursuit of strange, weird, and wonderful pulp reprints, I was finally able to find the Battered Silicon Dispatch Box 2006 reprints of the Park Avenue Hunt Club, which consisted of upper crust adventurers and amateur detectives, and their Asian butler, Wu, who was handy with a knife and a master of the martial arts.  Largely forgotten, but reprinted in this beautiful two volume set.  Took several years to locate the books.

The earlier Op5 stories by Frederick C. Davis (and the later ones by Wayne Rogers) are better written than the ones by Emile C Tepperman, who wrote all the Purple Invasion issues.  But the sheer mad epic scale makes the Purple Invasion one of the all time classic pulp stories.  I sometimes describe it as one of those occasional works of art that manages to achieve greatness without actually managing to hit “good” on the way there.

I have the whole Purple Invasion in the original pulps, I really should track down the few Op5 issues I’m missing one of these years..,

Congrats, that's a good one.  Quinn was highly regarded by Weird Tales readers and he contributed more stories to WT than anyone else.  Most of his stories were about Jules de Grandin, his occult detective character.  Grab a copy of Phantom Fighter, the Mycroft & Moran book (an Arkham House in disguise), for a good sampling of 10 Jules de Grandin stories hand-picked (and revised) by Quinn in 1966.

Phantom Fighter is on my want list, I've been toying with trying to put together a set of all the M&M books (other than 3 Problems) since I've got half of them already.

I had a rare treat yesterday. A bookstore had 3 copies of the first edition of The Outsiders and Others, and a copy of the first print on the shadows over Innsmouth (white cover).  I got to leaf through a copy of Outsiders but Shadows was in a bag.  He also had a collection of prebound leafs that he said 7 copies were made as a promo or something, but the price tag on that scares me as much as a good logecraft story!
