Are prices still climbing or have they eased up a bit???

5 years ago it was a $100 book.  Is there any reason that book should be more than say $150 now?

The prices for stuff like this was an incredible bubble over the last couple of years.

Are there really a lot more people wanting a CGC 9.8 copy of this for their actual collection than there were 5 years ago?

Didn't it cost $5 to slab a book 5 years ago and now it is like $70? :smirk:

I think of that now every time someone says, "only slab to sell", it may have a purpose and that is true, but I'm glad I slabbed to keep (thumbsu

"Only slab to sell" is poor advice, IMHO, if you don't want to leave your loved ones with a problem they have no idea how to deal with if you ever get hit by a bus.

If your collection has any significant value, it should be part of your estate plan -- and that means slabbing your books so that (a) you have an accurate appraisal of their value for insurance / estate planning purposes, (b) your heirs can similarly be educated on exactly what you have and what it's worth, and (c) the assets are easier for them to liquidate on whatever timetable they need to.

You should also leave behind specific advice on how you think your collection should be liquidated to maximize the benefit to those you leave behind.  Trust me, they have no idea what the options are and would be completely lost (not to mention susceptible to grift) if left to figure it out on their own.  Ideally you should have a good relationship with a specific dealer or auction house you trust to make sure your family is dealt with fairly.

Oh, and just to state the obvious, if you don't have a clear inventory of exactly what you own, and where it's stored, you're just being cruel.

I know this is the general "you" and not specifically me lol

Cause I've done that as quickly as I could, so much so, that when cgc had the grace period before prices officially went up? I sent off the rest of the 125 that I had lying around. I had slabbed the important ones already, but last years market, there were so many more books that were a "possibility."

Story short, it's what worked for me and I'm thankful.

I think you gave good criteria as to why it would be good etc.

I'm sure some would disagree, but it's what I did and for those reasons.  :)

Yep, that all makes sense. (thumbsu

Of course people are welcome to disagree.  IMHO, leaving valuable books to your heirs unslabbed is really inconsiderate unless two things are true:

  1. You are truly all in on that last recommendation I made, namely having a trusted expert (could be a dealer, but could also be a knowledgeable friend) who is going to help your heirs figure out a plan after you're gone.
  2. You are very confident that your heirs can afford to wait a year or more before they can get cash out of the collection.

Since apart from this thread I do not track A S-M 129 CGC graded sales, does anyone know if the just closed HA auction (https://comics.ha.com/itm/bronze-age-1970-1979-/the-amazing-spider-man-129-marvel-1974-cgc-nm-96-off-white-to-white-pages/a/122250-13111.s?ic4=GalleryView-ShortDescription-071515) winning bid of $6900, including buyer's premium, for an ow-w pages with less than stellar cover alignment copy is in line with recent prices outside of HA where they run the gamut from $12600 to $7800 for copies with white pages? Thank you.

It's $8795 w/BP and yes, that's right smack in the ballpark. I just had a nicer copy for $8500 in the Forum marketplace.

And frankly the forums have been slow but my stuff has sold pretty well and sometimes for more at auction.

Oops. Sorry about that. I saw the price without being signed in to Heritage. It showed the new BIN price. I now see the actual sale price was $6900 w/BP after signing into Heritage. That sounds about average for an off center copy with OWW pages. Centering and page quality affect BA books greatly. I'm actually not a fan of such disparity but that's the reality.

Thanks Roy. As I noted, I don't keep track of sales for this comic book outside of noting HA sales in this instant, and a ton of others, because I purchased my CGC graded copies from around 2006 to 2009 and have my raw copies and don't plan to sell, if ever, until, as I always joke, with my luck they are worth cover price again.

A bit behind but here are select results from the December Clink auction.    This is all sessions but I kept all results in one recap per title so as you go down you may see repeat grades that were part of later sessions.

It's still pretty ugly, but my detailed fiscal analysis has determined that the amount of green is increasing as one moves from right to left.

The red bloodbath is becoming a rather Christmas-y colour combination.

For the most part, the prices of the FFs in the Pedigree auction last night were pretty strong.
The only notable “ouch” moment I saw, was when the 9.8 136 went for only $300. The very same book sold for $3800 on clink a couple years ago.

Such a great summary. Thanks for continuing to do this. Seems to be more and more green showing up in the "vs last" column, albeit still mostly red. Maybe a sign that some books have already hit the bottom.

I noticed that as well, but it is afterall Pedigree Comics...  Who knows if there were any shenanigans with the bidding.

I did notice one very obvious error in my file - I failed to delete an old number from the Nov CL results.   There was no ASM #2 9.0 that sold for $3.4k in Nov vs the Dec sale of $25k....

Awesome summary, as usual. Thanks.

One note: JIM 83 4.0 is @ $111,000

I don’t think there were shenanigans. A friend of mine won some of them. He’s an aggressive bidder like me, and simply wanted them. I was talking to him real time during the bidding - of course he was tipsy.

I told him to pump the brakes a bit, as I have 9.8 candidates of some of them likely to get graded soon, but he has a stubborn streak.

So that is at least two really glaring mistakes.  lFat fingers apparently.....I will look through my notes but assume it was $11k.
