Fantastic Four #48 9.6, $37K = Four sales in 2022 were $38K, $28.8K, $56K and $37K. Five sales in 2021 were $36K, $29.5K, $38K, $26.5K and $19.8K.

Giant Size X-Men #1 9.8, $33.6K = Last 2 sales were $33.6K, then $33K and $36K.  All sales in 2022 previous to these were above $40K with a high of $55K.

Incredible Hulk #180 9.8, $22.8K = Last sale was $19K in Nov 2022, other sales last year were $35K, $26K, $24K and $33.6K.  2021 had a sale of 40.8K.

Incredible Hulk #181 9.8, $69K = Seven sales last year, lowest was $84K, all the rest over $90K with a high of $138K

Superman #1 5.0 Nova Scotia, $675K = Last sale for Nova Scotia was $84K in 2007, 5.0 for $720K in May 2022 and 4.0 in June 2022 for $815K

Tales of Suspense #39 9.2, $108K = Last sales $144K in 2021 and $168K in Nov 2022

All kidding aside, the people buying these books are not “us”: ham and eggers with mortgages working 9-5 and love comics. They’re either dealers/auction houses or stratospherically rich dudes/bros (who play by rules I can’t even imagine…), so good for them but tracking these books makes no sense to me. The health of the market is not the headliners, it’s how quickly you can move a bunch 100$-1000$ books at a decent price to get something “good”.

I understand what you are saying, but the values of the high grade books affect the values of lower graded books.  So if the values are going down on a high grade Fantastic Four #48, they are probably going down on a 2.0 copy as well, and if the prices are dropping on a key issue like FF #48, they are probably dropping on the other issues as well.

Personally, I'm finding it interesting to chronicle the wild swings in value in the last couple of years, which HAS to be having a ripple effect throughout the market.  IH #181 in a 9.0 has gone from a low of $4560 in 2019 to a high of $15158 in 2021 and now back down to a low of $7350 near the end of 2022.

That’s where I disagree… a 9.6-9.8 SA key has a VERY limited pool of buyers I don’t see how that’ll affect prices on a 5.0 where there are 1000’s of potential buyers. There is a definite disconnect between the tippy top books and the stuff we mortals can afford. I’d be more inclined to believe the opposite, a high on a mid grade can more positively affect higher grades than the reverse.

I think it is all interconnected.  For this discussion, I'm not really looking for the drivers of value, but where the market is headed.  I don't really care which came first, all I know is the data available to me says the chicken AND the egg or both losing value.

Thank you!  I was worried I was the only one who felt this way.  I want to know what is happening to the price of comics on my want list.  Not $1M books.  Doesn't affect me in the least.

I don't know whether the two guys above are able to play at high price levels noted above, but it's weird to complain about work other people do to provide us with information here. I can't play at that level, but I've always found the high-end market very interesting.

Back in '84 they made a Phantom radio cassette tape ("Fantomets nærradio") , anyway a sealed copy sold for 400$.....sounds like a lot as P isnt as popular as he once was , its extremely rare to find sealed tho

The health of the market has been very strong since November 2022 for $100 - $1000 books on eBay. Numerous other boardies have posted the same. I am getting new GPA all time highs on some sales so I wonder if the bottom may be starting to set. It is sad to say, but eBay has been getting better prices than my Clink submissions the past few months.

Yeah, ComicLink is on the downswing right now. I have a bunch of books in the January that they did not auction in the fall, and some in March. If the January prices are still weaker than GPA or eBay, I will not be consigning any more with them until I see their prices starting to improve. While I try to have some books in each auction, I am fine doing the extra work with eBay if the sale prices are 25%+ higher.

It's actually both. 

Highest graded sales pull up lower grade values for collectors who don't want to 'miss the boat' and lower grade numbers when strong do tend to push up higher grade values as high end collectors feel more confident paying strong to buy high grade copies.

But rarely do I see lower grade values dropping and equalling a drop in high grade values. 

It's important to note that the volume of books coming to market has increased over last year, creating an increase in supply (and that's saying something considering the previous year  of 2021 was a record year for both volume AND prices), so the increase in volume (people looking to cash in) is definitely going to create a price drop. That's normal economics.

From my own experience, selling on a fixed price as been more difficult compared to 6 months ago where everything flew out the door, and it's even a bit slower than 2019 where things sold steady at a moderate pace. This is because people are generally over fixated on GPA and nobody wants to 'overpay' but in reality, when I look at books I've auctioned some books have dropped, there's no denying that, but some have levelled off or sold for within their reasonable range and some are still selling at a high water mark. 

I had a few record numbers at auction that I couldn't move on here or elsewhere at a fixed price for even a fraction of my ask price and they sold at auction well over my ask, which was a nice surprise.

I've also spoken to quite a few higher volume dealers over the last couple of months and most seem to think the market is already rebounding in the general sense. 

It was soft last fall but that softness seems to have firmed up and they are less reluctant to discount again. 

And as I've stated already in this thread, any big books that seemed to sell really cheap at auction over the last few months are being bought by buyers who recognize there are market fluctuations and they are just going to buy on the dips and hold and resell on the bounce, which according to some is already happening.
