Just saw that a TEC 400 9.2 went for $1822 on ComicLink the other night.

GPA places a 9.2 in the $975 range (most recent sale was from 2020, but a 9.4 went for $1525 in January).

DTACollect has an 8.5 for sale for almost $1400.

Any thoughts on the jump in price for this book? Is this just symptomatic of the current hot market?

My guess is that presentation played a part. It has very nice, nearly perfect cover wrap with just a hint of white. 9.2s seem to typically have some clearly visible spine stresses but on this copy they really don’t pop out.

But overall I’d say it’s symptomatic of the current market.  I was entertaining placing a bid and even asked for a back cover scan but once it pushed up to $1,200 I knew it was going to be too rich a premium.

... right on . I know more than one person who considers that to be his finest cover .... me, I can only narrow down the list to maybe a top 10. This copy may also be a 9.4 in a 9.2 slab from their recent tight period. GOD BLESS....

Tec 400 in high grade is not as common on the market as Bats 232. And, there are people starting to speculate on the 1st Man-Bat since it has not really popped yet. Ras has appeared in the movies already, while Man-Bat has not.

Sold for more than the Bats 232 9.2 in the same auction hm

Which is doubly interesting, as I not only consider 232 to have the better cover, but also (by far) the better villain,

I ignore this stuff all the time..  I look at it like this - there is a minority of rich buyers, who have no regards for your comic logic, yesterday's valuations or your understanding of money - to them $1000 is like $100 to you - and they spend indiscriminately if not wantonly these days.  I ignore this completely.  I refuse to get sucked into it.  It is not wacky, it is not wrong - it simply is - it is nothing more than a rich man's desire to spend his money how he sees fit.  Would you say the same thing about a guy, who can spend $1,500 for a bottle of wine or a guy, who spends 220k on a sportscar?  This is no longer your comic market - it has been taken over (at least at the top) by a whole new breed of investors - get used to it I say and watch the ride albeit from the spectator stands-nosebleed section :o  my 2-cents :preach:

Just revisiting this thread to post up the 2 Detective 400 9.2 results from Clink this month:

While up a bit over that GPA number of $975 both are down from the $1,800 of the last Clink sale.  It seems to me that presentation clearly played a part in that previous sale because while both of these are nice, they don’t look quite as good as that last copy.

I can see a buyer paying a premium for a tightly graded, well-centered copy when a book has common production problems.

We all preach ‘but what you like!’

If that person who bought the Tec at $1800 is happy (and hopefully they are), then they won’t mind the overspend.

For me - I have the same problem with Swamp Thing #1. It is difficult to nail down a nicely centered copy (getting all of the ¢ on the right hand side & having no white or odd wrap on the spine side) in high grade with white pages.

There was a ST #1 that met those criteria (a 9.6 white pager) in a recent CLink auction & I think it went for about double what the prior 9.6 valuation was at.

I did not get that copy! But it did make me re-think how much more I will want to spend over my prior budget for one in the future.

Yow. The 9.8 hype. I quite enjoy my SS 7.5 copy. $64k is too much for my ego to demand from me.

The worst part would be showing it off and people would say "Oh very nice!" then change the subject. Haha. Or hum the theme to the Batman tv show from the 1960's and say "POW! BIFF!" to me. I didn't spend nearly $65k for you to be dismissive and trite. Look at it, I say. LOOK AT IIIIT!

It's got a sensational cover and is an anniversary ish.  But with 9 at that grade, the price is surprising.

Who's 'Neil'?  :baiting:
