ASM Macfarlane Run
1 1

3 posts in this topic

I have started to sell off large parts of my collection.

I was planning on keeping the following issues in my collection: ASM #1 - #400, FF #1 - #300, and DD #1 - #200. However, there are some books that I would really like to get graded, and, as we all know, that isn't cheap. So, one group of issues I was considering selling would be ASM #298 - #328, the entire ASM Macfarlane run, except #300. All my books would be in VF/NM condition. The HB,CYSAG forum estimated that my #316 would grade at 9.6 or higher.

Here's a lot of ASM issues #298, #299,#301,#304 - #325 and #328, which sold for $700 on April 22, 2001. My lot would contain all these issues plus #302, #303, and #326 - #328.

So if I was to put this lot up for sale on Ebay with a BIN price of $750, would that be unreasonable? Or would it be better to start an auction with a beginning bid of $599 and a BIN price of $800? Or if I was to try to sell them here on the boards, would an asking price of $700 be out of line?

I know that someone will say that I would be better off starting my auction at $0.99. I did that a few times, and I lost money when a lot of 25 books sold for $0.99. So, I will never start another auction at $0.99. If that loses me a few sales, then so be it. I would rather lose an occasional sale than to sell books that have a total value of $20 for $0.99.

It might be best to have my #316 graded by CGC. The last CGC 9.6 sold for $550. However, if I submit it through the Express tier, I will be lucky if I get the book back before Thanksgiving.

Any advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

I'd avoid including 326 and 327 as they are not part of the McFarlane run.

Hey

I sold two McFarlane runs on Ebay last November. They were all NM.

First I pulled out the 300s and 316s and sent them to cgc. 6 months later I got em back graded. Sold one of each and still have the others.

Then I pulled out the 298s, 299s & 301s and auctioned each one off. Looking back, if I could do it over, I would've had these graded as well instead of selling them raw.

What youre left with at that point is still a great lot for anyone looking to build the complete McFarlane run.

It's worth it to get the cgc membership and get the 300s and 316s graded if they are NM. Get em pressed too. That's something i regret not doing with my 300s and 316s.

It sucks having to wait 6 months for CGC to do their thing but i think it's worth it. And it's not really all that expensive.

EBay fees suck though. They take so much of your profit, makes my stomach turn.

I'm not sure what your asking price should be right now as I haven't really been watching that run lately.
