I worked at a place that was bought buy a venture capital firm. The place went to  fast. Customers were treated like ATM machines, and employees became expendable very quickly.

That's the VC model. Make a company grow too fast and bleed it dry at maximum speed/efficiency. Dump it when the company is just a shell of it's former self and you've alienated your base

Hopefully if that were the case we'd be able to pool our resources and donations and be able to make our own boards to keep this wonderful community alive.
