Another thing that mystifies me about this auction is the seller's comparisons to books sold for enormous sums in the recent Promise auction. He's posting pics of the books and the final hammer price, but what does that have to do with this book?

My guess is he's trying to lure in some rube who has never heard of comic books as collectibles but has a trust fund...stumbles across his auction....and thinks...wow!, got's to get me one of those!

Seller is obviously from the WC Fields school of selling;

You have obviously never met Theo...:roflmao:

To say he is a character is an understatement. This hobby is full of them.

If you think buying from him is a challenge, try selling to him...

Somehow, he has managed to sell stuff for 50 years. It probably started with the $1,800 Action #1 sale to Mitch.

Never met Theo in person, but have had conversations with him, negotiated a couple of deals and came away completely satisfied that both were fair.  I have no way of assessing anyone else's experiences even though I've heard stories.

I'm not trying to throw cold water on the fun, but in a very real sense ...for better or worse... Theo helped establish the high end marketplace.  Theo's sale of Action #1 way back in '73 brought national attention to comic collecting and to Mitch, so it's a little more than anecdotal even if it's just one small piece of a much larger mosaic.

Ale for thought.

Playing devil's advocate here. :devil:

The whole weird photo-in-briefs ad in OSG might've just been an attempt at a clever gimmick based on old Charles Atlas weight-lifting ads that appeared in comics and pulps back in the 1940's.

I wouldn't have believed it before seeing this ad, but...

Was this an error in judgment on Theo's part or at least in assessing his target audience? Probably. hm

That said, the inspiration for his ad seems much clearer in retrospect.

It reminds me of the flea market sellers that have some 2.0 book and quote how much it would be worth in 9.2, like that has anything to do with the book they are trying to sell...:facepalm:

That's because MM #6 predicted the success of Shark Tank! I just don't see one-a-day gummies curing anyone's addiction to comics.

I love my DC's Butt :idea: That is a keeper (thumbsuhm I have a 1 and 2 so 3 and 9 is what i want now

Regardless of the original motive we're still talking about it decades later...

What about the Burt Reynolds nude centerfold in Playgirl magazine?  That was what Theo was copying, not an ad selling body building where all strongmen posed in briefs.
