Just a shot because I don't know for sure but the story "Return to the Pitt" appears in Star Brand 17.

I dont think that story had the merged family in it though.

There's a Marvel Graphic Novel called "The Pitt"  and it's all about a family in a car that gets rescued.  So if this isn't The Pitt one shot you are referring to above, maybe that's the one you're looking for?
