Was there an "Edgar Church" for pulps? 0

Was there somebody who saved thousands of pulps in a low-humidity closet, whose collection was discovered and purchased decades later? Hundreds of pulps with "white pages"?

Or at least a "Recil Mason" of pulps?

If I recall, Church himself had some pulps, but they were not stored as well as the comics, or were otherwise unexceptional.

The Yakima Pedigree is considered one of the top collections. 

"A large pulp magazine collection was discovered in Yakima, Washington in the late 1990s. These pulps are characterized by their uniform high grade and bright white paper quality. In many cases the Yakima Copy is the highest grade copy known to exist of a particular pulp magazine issue. "

Good to know! Does anyone know the date range of Yakima, and quantity? Do all Yakima copies come with certificates of authenticity?

Not sure if they all come with certificates. Dave Smith did them for the ones he got but some went to other purchasers I believe. I believe they have markings. Nicest pages overall on any pulps I've seen.

I wish I had many more. I only have around a dozen or so now.

My memory is weak these days, but I seem to remember Dwight sharing info about pedigree and other high grade Pulp piles .... somewhere around the halfway mark of the original thread...it's titled something like "Sell Me All Your Pulps and go Pound Sand"  ... or something like that. I seem to remember beginning around page 240 something ... but I'm hazy. GOD BLES...

Problem with the Yakima pedigree is we (to the best of my knowledge) don't know who the original owner was.  Story I got from the original purchaser of the collection was that a couple of guys showed up with milk crates of the pulps they pulled from a storage locker, which he then sold to the guy from Seattle.

The Yakima Collection is very nice, but not the top pedigree in pulps, because it’s a little bit later Pedigree and not really in the sweet spot for pulps.  Advanced pulp collectors know this.

The Yakima collection is known because there were pedigree certificates made for the books for promotion, and being that most of them were sold in the early 2000’s, they were the most recent to the market with most most being offered for sale.  The planets recently came up at Heritage, so comic people have heard a little bit about the Yakima collection

However most of the Yakima's were not in the sweet spot” era of pulps (1930-38) especially early to mid 1930’s.  The Yakima’s generally were later, from 1938 to 1950-ish (however there are earlier issues here and there, locked away in collections that would be very impressive).  

In comparison with comics, the church collection included the early comics/sweet spot in the late 30’s and early 40’s.  If you were comparing time periods the Yakima’s would be more like the Promise Collection.  Both were a little bit later collections in each of their genres.

There is another prominent collection that came out 15 years before the Yakima’s, and from a much earlier time period (late 1933-39) that can be easily identified, (which I will explain at some point).

There are also stunning Popular file copies that came out of books from 1932 to the mid-40s but they were distributed to multiple collectors.

As well there were high-grade runs/Collections  of many pulps that came out of the woodwork from various sources, but are locked away in collections.  They had no markings on them so there’s no way that they can be identified once they were split up.  Some of these collections had books from as early as 1923 and up to 1939.

One important note to remember is that there were Pulps at one time in the church Collection,  but Edgar Church ripped off all the covers, keeping only the covers and not the interiors, as they probably took up too much space

Are Yakima and Popular the only pulp "pedigrees"?

I believe some of the Yakima’s were sold to someone other than Dave Smith at Fantasy Illustrated. Thusly, sold out in the marketplace with no certificates. 

I only have the two above I bought directly from Dave very inexpensive just because I liked the covers. 

I was told that there are markings on them but don’t recall any on these two.

I'd like to see some of the "snow white" pages of the Yakimas. Everyone always just shows the covers. Same with the Church books.

Not sure if mine is representative of the pedigree as a whole, this book sat in a yakima book store for 20 years after the bulk of the collection went off to the west.

There were a number of Yakima’s sold the different people by different members of the family.

Popular file Copies are not a pedigree.

There is one Pedigree that is much earlier, more prominent, and can be identified easier.  At some point in the future I will talk about it.

Yakima Pedigree came from a family in which the family members started to just go in and take a large quantities and start selling them.

A chunk of them went to a local bookstore (later one’s), and then or sold to Dave Smith.

A couple boxes of them did show up at eight comic show but basically the family was selling them the different sources outside of that as well.

Thank God he didn't do that for the comics! However, if he'd had a bigger house, perhaps he could have saved everything intact.

Got this pulp from David T Alexander several years ago. He claimed it was a file copy from the pulp author Art Lawson. He bought it directly from his estate. He had many of them but I was drawn to this one because of it's excellent Halloween cover. Pages are about as white as any pulp I've ever owned. Looks un-read...
