HBO Max has ordered a pilot for a potential “Dead Boy Detectives” series, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.

Based on the DC Comics characters created by Neil Gaiman, the one-hour series would follow the Dead Boy Detectives — Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine — who decided not to enter the afterlife in order to stay on earth and investigate crimes involving the supernatural.

Sebastian Croft and Ty Tennant are set to play Rowland and Paine respectively in the upcoming third season of “Doom Patrol,” though they are not believed to be attached to the pilot at this time.

Would this still have been announced if I hadn’t sold their app’s and stand alone run last year undervalue?

That's how it normally works. You part with key books of a character and then the studio gets the alert 'KICK OFF PRODUCTION'!

The “Dead Boy Detectives” pilot at HBO Max has found its main cast, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.

George Rexstrew, Jayden Revri (“The Lodge”), and Kassius Nelson (“Last Night in Soho,” “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events”) will star in the three lead roles. Rexstrew is a recent graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, and “Dead Boy Detectives” would mark his onscreen debut.

HBO Max is officially on the case with Dead Boy Detectives.

The streamer has given a series order to the project, which is based on a DC comic by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner. The Flight Attendant creator Steve Yockey adapted the comic and will serve as showrunner on the series from Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Productions.

The DC drama based on the Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner comics has been sold from HBO Max, the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streamer that developed the show, to Netflix.

Producers Warner Bros. Television shopped the drama after sources say the series didn’t fit with the new chapter of content that DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran are building for the comic book powerhouse. That plan includes five inter-connected shows that will live alongside Peacemaker on HBO Max. Also contributing to the show’s move between platforms is the fact that HBO Max would not have been able to market the show until 2024, with execs at the streamer blessing producers to take the show out elsewhere.

Dead Boy Detectives cinematographer Marc Laliberté has confirmed that filming has wrapped on the live-action DC series' first season.

Laliberté shared some atmospheric behind-the-scenes photos from Netflix's Dead Boy Detectives to Instagram, featuring himself and a number of other crew members, including director Pete Chatmon. "That's a wrap on eason 1 of Dead Boy Detectives," Laliberté wrote. "What an incredible gift of a show that just kept on giving with every new -script and every new director. It took a village to bring another of Neil Gaiman's incredible worlds to the small screen. So thankful to have been a part of its gestation."
