There hasn’t been much talk about this ,mostly because of Covid and the fact that it’s in Ohio ,but renowned cartoonist Patrick McDonnell (Mutts) has been exhibiting his fine arts paintings for the first time at the University of Ohio in Columbus and the show is spectacular.  We all know that there is a fine line between fine art and illustration and the same goes for sequential art and fine art. It is exciting to see this artists’ handling of color and space on a large scale. ( most are over four feet) especially since he has made a career of working in black and white in 4 inch rectangles. In this exhibition his talents burst onto the large canvases with energy and the same ironic humor (some times macabre) that has made “Mutts” a great read. It’s not up much longer(ends Oct 3) so if you are in the area ,Check it out ,great stuff and you won’t be disappointed!
