The smell is not going to be a problem.  It does not persist.  Just make sure that if you're going to press the book afterward, you wipe the entire cover carefully with a makeup pad or clean paper towel.  If any of the little bits of putty remain on the book, the press will melt them into the paper.  Even the microscopic ones.  So be very sure the book is clean of any Absorene residue before you press it.

Take a clean piece of tissue paper and gently wipe over one of the areas. If there is transfer to the tissue it could be dirt. If it smudges it could be glue or tape residue.
