No contest. The only Superman 1 CGC 7.0 (2 higher graded copies), wins by a landslide over ANY of the ELEVEN Cap 1 CGC 7.0s (14 higher graded copies).

I just wanted to point out that the 2 7.0s side by side was sexy as sh.it. All that would be missing for a perfect trifecta would be a Bats 1 7.0

One of the interesting insights that is buried in this lengthy post is the evolution of CGC.  What started out as a company that was used primarily to spot undisclosed restoration has morphed into a company that is now used primarily to increase the grades (and related values) of unrestored books.  It does this by advocating and being part of a process that involves various physical manipulations, many of which would not have increased a book's value before CGC.

I'm surprised there are so few high grade Superman #1's. I remember being at a San Diego Show in the 90's and it seemed like every dealer had a copy of Superman #1 for sale. Not that they were high grade but the amount of them for sale made me think they weren't as rare as other books. I doubt I saw more than one or two Captain America #1 at that show. Wonder if there is a bunch waiting for grading in old time collector's stashes. Wouldn't surprise me.

It would surprise the hell out of me.

For whatever reason, it's a book that just did not survive in high grade.

I've always suspected not many were distributed beyond the east coast states. Or the large majority of them were distributed in the north eastern USA.

I think Superman 1 isn't terribly uncommon, relative to the era.  But in grade it's virtually non-existent.  And as a consequence it seems like many copies that surface are restored, at least more so than other GA keys.

Rather than throw out ignorant statements I decided to look it up.  CGC census says:

Supe 1: 68 universal, 90 restored  57%

Cap 1: 88 universal, 74 restored  45%

Bat 1: 128 universal, 136 restored  51%

Action 1: 42 universal, 28 restored  40%

Marvel 1: 30 universal, 33 restored  52%

Tec 27: 35 universal, 36 restored  51%

So that's numerically true.

Same. I've never heard a whisper of a rumor of other copies. If they're out there, they've been buried forever. Anything is possible but I don't think there's a flood of them waiting to be released.

Bang zooms copy looks like a hg candidate for one.

Yeah those are the kind of collections I meant. Old school piles of books; seems like everyone would have wanted a Superman 1 if they could have found it. I wonder if @Yellow Kid remembers the frequency of nice copies coming into Leonard's store.

Oh very good. Interesting stuff.

I did some math also, regarding high grade examples of these books. The numbers are in this order : Number of graded blue labels - Number graded 5.0 and higher - Percentage.

Action 1 - 42, 14, = 33%

Detective 27 - 35, 19, = 54%

Sup 1- 68, 12, = 18%

Bat 1 - 128, 36, = 28%

Cap 1 - 88, 51, = 58%

Marvel 1 - 30, 12, = 40%

And if you count only Blue Label 7.0's and higher the percentages are: Action 1 -14%, Tec 27 -23%, Sup 1 -4.4%, Bat 1 -14%, Cap 1 -30%, Marvel 1 -23%

And there you have an example of 30 minutes of a day in my life.

Me? I don't know the answer to either one of those questions. But I have a feeling you have a pretty good idea of how many, just by the way you said it.
