How can one tell the difference between mold and dirt on comics?

I have some spots on a few comics and I am not sure if I am being neurotic, wait I am sure of that hehe. What I am not sure of is if these select comics have mold on them versus dirt? Is there a way to tell? And if so does it matter? Thank ye, one and all.

Pics would be good, but have you tried sniffing it at the centrefold? A lot can be deduced from the smell of a comicbook. Are there any other signs of age that might suggest it's mold rather than dirt, like foxing, rat chews etc that tell tales of where and how well the comic has been stored.

The yellowish or tannish spots are known as foxing. Paper oxidizing I believe. It happens usually on comics that haven’t been stored in great condition. Not mold but also won’t clean off like most contact dirt.

I agree with this, although foxing is usually a result of mold and contaminants in the paper.  The mold may be dormant, or died off, leaving these ‘stains’…along with other conditions.  Here’s a link for further info…
