Popular Post thecollectron
I bought Our Army At War #81 a long time ago, thinking I was getting the first Sgt. Rock in "The Rock Of Easy Co.!" It bugged me a little that he was called Sgt. Rocky throughout the story but I figured it was still the first Sgt. Rock. Perhaps the Historical Documents had gotten his name wrong and corrected it later? Anyway, later on when I read "The Rock And The Wall!" in Our Army At War #83 it seemed like the true beginning of a new series of stories of Easy Company and Sgt. Rock. I think Chris Pedrin's analysis of the evolution of Sgt. Rock in his book Big Five Information Guide is spot-on. I've attached scans of representative pages from OAAW #81, #82, and #83: Comicdey, Larryw7, IngelsFan and 2 others

So for decades it was considered that OWAW #81 was the agreed 1st appearance of Sgt.Rock and I can see that. It has "Rock" on the cover and it even says "THE ROCK OF EASY COMPANY". DC even reprinted that issue but NOT #83. Why would they do that if issue 81 was not considered the "first appearance". Who decided that issue 83 was the first appearance? Was it just a general consensus? Did the market decide? Both. People read it and realized that the name might have debuted earlier, but the character first appeared in 83. Randall Ries
I thought he was first Sgt Rocky for one issue. Then Sgt Rock. His first name was Jeremy.
shadroch
I have no dog in the fight but the Sgt. blasting away in the last panel of #81 certainly looks like the Rock I remember.
KirbyJack
I was in the 81 camp, but I have never been a Rock reader. When people who love the series (the way I love Fantastic Four) said it was 83, that was good enough for me.

I absolutely agree with the consensus that #83 is the first true appearance, but have to acknowledge in fairness that Kanigher is not unbiased here, since Bob Haney-- not Kanigher-- authored #81.
