Reading Suggestions

Hello. I want to tip my toe into the waters of monthly comic book purchases again.

When I am on Instagram, I often see issues of "Something Is Killing the Children" and "Ice Cream Man." Would someone be willing to give a brief synopsis of these two titles? If I decide to read one (or both), I will start by reading some TPBs so I get caught up.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions you have.

Hmmm... what's the best way to describe this series? Maybe Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets John Wick with a dash of Midnight Mass? Maybe a touch of the Waking Dead, too, as - aside from the central character - these are pretty much everyday people we're seeing in teh story.

It is pretty violent, and keeps its cards close to its chest plot wise - it will likely be several volumes before we really know what's happening. Volume One was a fast-paced monster hunt adventure. Volume Two was not quite as strong (though still good), and begins to deal with the aftermath of Volume One, but also begins to seed a much more complex back story.

I do suspect this reads better as trades than as singles.

Does that help?

Really good art as well.

I don't see enough people talking about this series.  If you do decide to dip your toes in it, pick up the hard cove edition with the first 18 issues.  The art really pops in the larger format.  It isn't a quick read like most modern comics as there is a lot going on in the world they are building.

Something Killing the Children is good as well but will be a quick read.  I have always seen this as a more graphic Stranger Things.

Ice Cream Man is great as well.  I'm not really sure how to describe it though.  I have read through the first 3 trades and loved it.  I asked Santa to bring me Vol 4,5 and 6.  It's dark, twisted and different which makes it a worthy read.

Monstress is worth your time.

I would also recommend Daniel Warren Johnson works: Beta Ray Bill and Wonder Woman: Dead Earth.

Batman: Universe by Brian Michael Bendis

and currently reading: Hawkeye by Matt Fraction… so far, impressive

Something is killing the children is like Stranger things the Netflix show except insanely violent.

Yeah I am not impressed overall. Its a good read the art is average at best. I think they did a good job of doing
all types of variants and covers to draw in speculators as well. I like the genre and the story I just need a little more
better mixture of art & story to keep me interested. I will continue to read it in trades, but not interested enough
to stay monthly.

It won an Eisner award right out of the gate. The art is stunning and I can see it drawing in Manga Fans and Anime fans.
I gave a trade to my brother-in-law and he asked me for all the rest of trades for Christmas.

I just read SIKTC Vol. 3 and am still enjoying it.

Best book of the year for me, though, is the new Strange Adventures hardcover from DC. An great story, packaged in a book that has amazing production values and is - in itself - an aspect of the story.

Thank you for everyone's suggestions. I just got the first volume TPBs for SIKC and TICM, but I haven't had a chance to read them. If I find that I don't care for these titles, I will definitely try some of your suggestions next.

Let us know what you think

Nice House on the Lake is awesome.

I've enjoy it more than SIKTC

I second the recommendation of The Nice House on the Lake. The first six issues are out. They are on hiatus I believe until March when the last six issues start coming out. Also, I'd recommend The Silver Coin, another horror anthology like Ice Cream Man, and Home Sick Pilots, a bizarre little book about a couple bands who get involved with ghosts and a walking haunted house. Oh, and pretty much everything that has come out that Jeff Lemire has written. :)
