The CW is looking to further build on its DC comics-inspired programming slate with Gotham Knights, a drama in the works from Batwoman executive producers Chad Fiveash & James Stoteraux and the show’s executive story editor Natalie Abrams. The project comes from Greg Brlanti’s Berlanti Productions, which is behind the CW’s Arrowverse, and Warner Bros. TV, where the company is based.

Written by Abrams, Fiveash & Stoteraux, Gothom Knights is based on Gotham Knights characters from the DC comics created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. In the wake of Bruce Wayne’s murder, his rebellious adopted son forges an unlikely alliance with the children of Batman’s enemies when they are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader. And as the city’s most wanted criminals, this renegade band of misfits must fight to clear their names. But in a Gotham with no Dark Knight to protect it, the city descends into the most dangerous it’s ever been. However, hope comes from the most unexpected of places as this team of mismatched fugitives will become its next generation of saviors known as the Gotham Knights.

Gotham Knights comes from Batwoman writers Chad Fiveash, James Stoteraux and Natalie Abrams — though it’s not a spinoff of that series. It’s based on DC characters created by by Bob Kane with Bill Finger (and unrelated to an upcoming Warner Bros. Games release). Following the murder of Bruce Wayne, his rebellious adopted son forms an alliance with the children of Batman’s enemies when they’re all framed for killing the Caped Crusader. With Gotham as dangerous as it’s ever been, the group of fugitives could be the city’s next saviors.

Warner Bros. TV and Berlanti Productions are producing. Fiveash and Stoteraux are EPs along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden. Danny Cannon will direct and exec produce the pilot; Abrams (who is married to The Hollywood Reporter West Coast TV editor Lesley Goldberg) is a co-exec producer.

The CW's Gotham Knights pilot has cast its Row siblings. The Batman characters spinoff series set in Gotham City will star series regulars Tyler DiChiara (The Virgin of Highland Park) and Fallon Smythe (grown-ish) as Cullen and Harper Row, Variety reports. Based on the DC comic book Batman: Gotham Knights, the Bat-spinoff is the latest from executive producer Greg Berlanti (Titans, The CW's The Flash) and is written and executive produced by Chad Fiveash (Gotham, Krypton) and James Stoteraux (The Vampire Diaries, Batwoman).

Smythe's Harper Row, who in the comics is the costumed Batman ally called Bluebird, is described as "streetwise, acerbic and often underestimated. The blue-haired bisexual is a gifted engineer who can fix anything. But what Harper wants most of all is to repair the broken lives of her and her brother, Cullen, the only person she trusts."

Reads the description for DiChiara's Cullen Row, "After years of hiding his true self from an abusive parent, the transgender teen is tired of being polite and agreeable. Clever and adept at reading human nature, Cullen is ready to fight his own battles."

It should be hard to screw up an epic comic series, yet Dc manage to do it.

There's just a lack of continuity of focus with DC.

80% young adult stuff - of which most is garbage (probably Titans is the main success) and 20% adult - which works and works well (Peacemaker, the Joker)

Either DC management are totally oblivious to this or there are too many people pulling in separate directions.

DC most certainly does NOT need another YA show.

This sums up how it looks to me.

I love reviewers who compare one show to another they haven't actually seen and then fail to notice that Ben Mackenzie isn't even in Gotham Knights. I turned off after 40 seconds.

WB Studios did away with DC Films years ago to roll it into its grand production portfolio. So general studio executives were making calls on what a comic book production should have.

But I would say you may be missing out on many DC properties that have worked well and better. Including:

  • Superman & Lois
  • Stargirl
  • Krypton
  • Pennyworth
  • Gotham
  • Lucifer
  • Batman TAS
  • Batman Brave & the Bold
  • Harley Quinn TAS
  • Young Justice
  • Doom Patrol
  • Titans
  • Smallville (at least 6:10 seasons)

All despite studio executive tampering that just needs to stop. That story from Goyer where one insufficiently_thoughtful_person asked him how is Superman going to fly back to Krypton at the end of Man of Steel is nuts!

I enjoyed Gotham and Titans (both teetering towards 15+ rather than PG)

I liked Doom Patrol - but that was most certainly an Adult show with nudity and F bombs

Lucifer turned into a hopelessly repetitive parody, and the others were poor - as in uninteresting after a couple of eps - which is as bad as it gets.

Don't forget that stinker - Legends of Tomorrow - which was so bad it was actually watchable for Percell and Miller hamming the heck out of it!

They don't need to turn it into a porno swearfest with guts flying everywhere - but they do need to look at peacemaker - and stuff the 'The Boys' and try to work out why they drew in more viewers per episode than Stargirl did in its whole run.

To many shows - Later series of Walking Dead, Batgirl, Ms Marvel, Stargirl, Legends etc suffer from simply being Vanilla.

Same stuff, different cape.

It's a shame as there is so much good DC stuff to draw on.

Did you actually watch Season Two??

Eclipso was racially putting down one of the kids to get her to hate him so as to increase his evil powers. There is nothing 'vanilla' about that. Other than some viewers were sitting there thinking, "HECK YEAH!"

Honestly, no I didn't.

I'm pretty sure though, that it doesn't compare to the 'Watchmen' TV series.

Anyway - semantics - you get the point I'm making, rather than go show by show.

Watchmen is another case in point - searing, educational, and adult orientated - and a smash hit.

Not sure if 'Stargirl' will be described as such.

I think we can agree that they really need to decide a way they want the DCU to go - and stick with it. It's all over the place TBH.

Amen to that!

I am now concerned how this Gotham Knights show is just going to detract from the go-forward DC brand. I'm surprised the new CEO is letting it get this far.

Zaslav had a chance to turf Emmerich, Hamada and the rest of the WB/DCU leadership team at the time of the deal, but retained them for some reason. That is going to be a very costly mistake longer term from the look of things. It also says something about Zaslav's strategic approach - as the CEO he had a chance to change them out and buy some time with the re-branding of the DCU. Now, even though he has finally turfed Emmerich, if it falters that is as much on him as it is on them. Rule #1 of an acquisition - you always can an underperforming management team from the start so you can place the blame on them with investors.
