I thought I would post this here for those that don't venture into comics general.

Posted on 12/16/2021

As a FREE service to all Associate and higher members, Grader Notes can be accessed through the Verify CGC Certification tool.

Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) is excited to announce that as of December 16, 2021, all available Grader Notes for comics are provided for free to CGC Associate and higher members and Authorized Dealers.

In addition to full submission privileges, there are many great benefits to being a CGC Associate member or higher, and now access to all available Grader Notes for comic books is one of them. Previously, CGC Associate, Premium and Elite members received complimentary Grader Notes only for their own comic book submissions. With this update, whenever a comic book has Grader Notes, CGC Associate and higher members will be able to view them for free.

CGC Grader Notes are a valuable part of the grading process that provide more information about CGC-certified comic books. When CGC graders examine a book, they may enter comments about its condition that describe problems, indicate the quality of interior pages and help explain why a collectible received the grade it did.

Some examples of CGC Grader Notes include:

  • Right Center Front Cover Lite Fingerprints
  • Left Center Back Cover Moderate Erasure Mark
  • Top Spine Water Damage
  • Staple Rusted w/Rust Stained Interior
  • Interior Heavy Tanning

For more information about CGC Grader Notes, click here. Please note that Grader Notes will no longer be offered for sale individually.

How to access CGC Grader Notes

Log in to your CGC Associate, Premium or Elite account and go to the free Verify CGC Certification tool. Enter the CGC certification number for the comic that you would like to look up. If Grader Notes are available, they will be viewable here.

If you are not logged in to your account or you are not a CGC Associate member or higher, you will see a button if a book has Grader Notes, which will prompt you to sign in to your account or join CGC.

Join CGC today!

Now is a great time to join CGC as an Associate, Premium or Elite member. Not only are free Grader Notes available for at these membership levels, you get full submission privileges, 10% off at the CCG Store and a free CGC Shipping Kit Voucher if you are a new member. Also, the CGC Online Submission Form has been upgraded to make submitting collectibles faster and easier, and there’s much more to come as CGC continues to optimize and expand its services!

As another boardie had posted on the other thread here in Comics General, this move not surprisingly looks to be another huge cash grab by CGC:

CGC got rid of a small revenue stream of people paying for graders notes.

CGC created a large revenue stream of people checking graders notes to see if a crack-press-resubmit will result in a higher grade.

Yes, brilliant decision.

Especially since you have to have a PAID MEMBERSHIP in order to access these free Graders Notes which will no longer be for sale on an individual basis.  If I remember correctly, I believe I've paid no more than $20 so far after some 20 odd years for Graders Notes and now they want me to pay $25 per year to access these so-called free notes.  I wonder how many other boardies and collectors in general are in this same situation.  (shrug)

Any bets that this $25 initial membership offer is just to draw you into the big hungry jaws of this money beast and before you know it, the annual fees will be rising up substantially.

Probably, but I have the membership because I've used the boards a lot and felt that it was only right for me to pay.

This just saved me a few hundred dollars of grief - a seller had a very nice looking 7.5 book for sale and stated the defects could be pressed out for a grade bump (spin stress)...but since notes are now free it just took a few seconds to learn that the entire book has rippling and 'moderate staining to cover' which wasn't at all visible from their photos.

edit: To clarify, it's for these 'smaller' books where free grader notes excel. Before I would only purchase them for big purchases in order to vet something epic, but for anything a few hundred dollars or less it was never worth it to buy em. This will result in better confidence in buying CGC books overall (though they do need to have notes, at least one, on all books up to 9.6)

Agreed -- I like this feature a lot.

Was contemplating a 5.5 and looked up the notes -- had the top and bottom staples detached at cover, though only the bottom was obvious. I don't know if the notes are wrong, or I'm reading them wrong, but either way, saved me some hassle.

@CGC Mike

Dear Mike,

I just received three books today but I have NO grader notes.  Two books look too nice for 9.2 and I REALLY want to know why they gave the grades.

Checked my books all over to find any significant defects.  I have no clue why my books were given 9.2 even I am a premium member and felt unappreciated.

I am sorry to hear that.  If you would like, you can PM me the submission number and your account number, and I will try to find out if we have any graders notes for those books.
