I actually like the idea of thinking about collecting goals. I'm about to enter my 3rd year back in the hobby after being away for a dozen years. I didn't have any goals when I started (except lamenting the comics I sold years ago). Now that I'm a bit more settled, I'm hoping this 3rd year is a year with goals I can meet. 

1) Post here more. I lurk but don't comment as much as I want to.
2) Actually list the comics I have in my "to sell" pile. I already use a CPA so throwing a new 1099 into the mix won't be too much of a pain.
3) Read more. I have a very short pull list but I still only sit down and read new issues once every quarter. I'd like to do better.
4) Secure two Tales of Suspense issues below #49. 
5) Secure a high grade copy of Iron Man 225. 
6) Complete my raw run of Kamala Khan's Ms. Marvel (and a few CGC 9.8s if they show up)
7) Grab a super low grade copy of TOS 57.
8) Finish my IM 1-55 run. 
9) Continue my love of high presenting mid-grade comics. If the front is clean but the back isn't that great...:cloud9:

The set that I was looking at was #39 and #40 in CGC 8.5. Looking at GPA, an FF #39 8.5 sold for $421 in December, 2021, and an FF #40 8.5 sold for $336 in October, 2021. His asking price for the FF #39 is 60% higher than the most recent sale, and his asking price for the FF #40 is 44% higher than the most recent sale. Yes, I understand that GPA is not the be all end all for pricing. I would like these books, but I wasn't willing to pay his asking price. Also, he gave a lecture about how I don't understand the first thing about FMV.

My collecting goals for this calendar year: 

  • The Joker (1975) set (competitive set)
    • This is a set that I want to complete in Near Mint or higher grade. Ideally, 9.8 - but some of these are hard to find. I'll be looking to grab any book that I don't already own in 9.4 or above. 
  • Rogues Gallery (custom set)
    • Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 (9.6 - 9.8) - 1st appearance of Bane
    • Batman #635 (9.6 - 9.8) - 1st appearance of Jason Todd as Red Hood
    • Batman #386 (9.6 - 9.8) - 1st appearance of Black Mask
    • Batman #609 (9.8) - 1st appearance of Tommy Elliot (Hush)
  • The Joker vol 2 (2021) (guilty pleasure - completionist run)
    • #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7 variants by Adams, Sienkiewicz, and Banks (NM raw)
    • #2 Hairsine 1:50 Variant in 9.8 - 1st appearance / 1st cover of Vengeance
    • All new issues, all covers (NM raw)

Reading goals.. don't know where to start... Will complete volumes 29 - 32 of the walking dead to finally catch up, will continue to read Nocterra, Geiger, Dept. of Truth, BRZRKR, SIKTC in TPB...  Really need to work through my pile of shame to catch up on all the trades and floppies I bought last year and didn't get around to reading.

Just returning to the hobby after selling it all off about 10 years ago, when my son was born.  Well now he's 10 (obviously), and is really into Spiderman recently.  He's always been raised in a pro-comic household and loves anything Batman, but this last Spiderman movie got him interested in comics, so who am I to argue?  I've been buying up low-mid grade BA Spideys for him, but putting them in a virtual "chore store" that he can earn chore bucks to pay for. It's actually working!

Not surprisingly, I want to get some of the books I used to own, mainly my avatar: Batman #27.  Mine was a CGC 9.2.  I also had some Batman silver/bronze age keys like 155, 171, 200, 227 (one of my faves!), 232, 234.  But they cost SO much more now.  Guess that's true for every comic.  (And so much more than just 18 months ago, not just compared to when I got out in 2012.)

I'm also considering:

  • Neal Adams Batman/Detective covers
  • JSA appearances in the silver age
  • Low grade GA 'Tec (even cover-only)

Having fun figuring out which direction I want to collect this go around, as I can't afford it all.  And I hope I don't sell, if I get burnt out again.  Learned that lesson.
