115 comics so far this year.

Marvel's Mightiest Heroes #51: Blade (Collects Tomb of Dracula #10 and Blade Vol. 6 #1-6) - I really enjoy these UK hardcovers. I read the Punisher book last year. These hardcovers tend to reprint the character's first appearance, then a mini series or story arc. Tomb of Dracula #10 was nothing special. Poor 1970s Marvel story. I found the mini series interesting. The story followed Blade hunting vampires and crossing paths with some Marvel characters (Spider-Man, Wolverine, Morbius, Dr. Doom), with flashbacks to his origin and upbringing, with everything coming together at the end. Similar to the Punisher, Blade has a nice anti-hero bend that makes the character interesting to follow. Art of Chaykin is uneven at times.

JLA JSA Virtue and Vice GN

JSA All-Stars 1 to 8

Justice Society of America Annual 1

Justice Society of America, Kingdom Come Special Superman, Magog, and The Kingdom

Justice League of America 8 to 10 Lightning Saga tie-ins, 11, 12

Hawkman 23 to 25 Black Reign tie-ins

A very consistent and highly-readable series by Johns and Goyer.  Lots of great stuff; sequels to Zero Hour and Kingdom Come, the introduction of Johnny Sorrow in a quite bizarre Lovecraftian story, Injustice be Done, Stealing Thunder, time travel stories in which the modern JSA visits ancient Egypt, and also teams up with the Golden Age version in the 1940s, Black Reign and the start of Black Adam's Kahndaq saga, and lots of quality shorter stories throughout.

I picked up a complete run of all of this JSA stuff in a collection last week, and I'm very tempted to keep it and read it myself. You may have pushed me over the edge!

I am waaaaaaaaaaaay behind on reading, it's highly unlikely I'll get caught up on this year's goal. We escaped to the lake house this weekend, so I was able to get a little reading done.

The last "new" comic I read was Human Target #4, so that's on the list. Still loving this series.

This weekend I finally finished up Justice League International Omnibus 2. I'm on record (many times) as this being my favorite superhero title, and this re-read hasn't changed that feeling. However, aside from the nostalgia bump, this volume is definitely a come down from the previous omni. It starts strong with lots of beautiful Adam Hughes artwork, and the less refined but still zippy early Sears work over on JLE. Eventually Linda Medley shows up on JLI, and while I think she's terrific, and would highly recommend her Castle Waiting to anyone, her run on JLI is a bit of a comedown after Maguire and Hughes. And the General Glory storyline, while intermittently amusing, is far from the highpoint for the title. Still lots and lots of nostalgia tied up in these pages, and I enjoyed the re-read.

Rick Veitch's Brat Pack I've not read in many, many years, and in fact, I'm not sure if I've ever read the trade version, which was altered a bit from the original published comics. This book still has a scuzzy charm, and to be certain, it was a trailblazing work. It's often ignored in the wake up Dark Knight Returns and the other grimdark superhero books of the 80's and 90's, but Garth Ennis' entire shtick borrows heavily from these pages. Some of the content wouldn't fly nowadays, it's a bit problematic, bit it still packs a fun, vulgar punch.

Last up was the Sir Edward Grey Witchfinder omnis, and man, I love this stuff. I'm sure I've read most, if not all of, these stories in floppies over the years, but to read them all in one go, between these two attractive, chunky hardcovers, really did the trick. If you're a sucker for Victorian spook shows, you can't go wrong here. The entire Mignolaverse remains one of my favorite things about comics, ever.

So, that brings my very meager, and indeed embarrassing, 2022 total to 157 books. Yikes!

131 comics so far this year

Firefly: Blue Sun Rising Vol 1: the Firefly series, unfortunately, continues to get worse. The series started strong, but the plot is getting really silly and the dialogue has lost charm that makes Firefly unique. I'm still not a fan of the art.

Batman: The Long Halloween TPB: Great self-contained Batman story. I'm not sure what I could add to the praise already provided by others. I'll read the sequel, Dark Victory, soon.

Forgot to update my list here for the month of March so here it is.

Nothing really stood out this month, Venom has been continually letting me down, not really digging the new series, Batman titles were meh (actually dropped Batman from my pull list) and everyhting else was either just ok or a reread. So I guess I've gotta go with Pestilence as being my favorite of the month just because it was a fun and gorey read.

144 Comics this year. Slightly behind last year's pace, but I think I'll catch up.

GI Joe (Marvel) #1 - 10: This was my first time reading the original Marvel Joe comics. I only read a few random issues over the years (like #21). I was a huge fan of the cartoon and 3 3/4 figures growing up. When I asked for recommendations and opinions about the series, most of the comments suggested that the first issues were great, then the series got less interesting as the comic got more like the cartoon. While the comic was well written and interesting, I kept wanting the comic to be more like the cartoon. It's early, but where are all the cool Joes and Cobra? I know they come later, and I'll certainly keep reading.

BTW, and I the only one who likes to print bookmarks when I start a new series? Just print out your favorite images, fold, and use some self-adhesive laminate.
