So I was perusing Youtube and saw someone talking about this "error" variant of ASM 194

Notice the top right where the banner, instead of being all red, has a smidge of yellow. I personally have seen these small errors before and have one similar on an ASM book from a few issues earlier (I have to dig through my stuff tonight and will post here when I find it).

Do you think this comic should be noted as an error by CGC if graded?

Printing error, sure.  Variant, no.  But I see the rationale of say if 20% of the printed copies had the same printing error, where you could call it a Error Variant.

There is actually a 35 cent variant that on some copies also has a printing error, which I find interesting.

I am curious how CGC makes such a determination though. Is it simply enough people asking or knowing? I could care less personally but people within the community do (or are trying to make it a thing anyways)

How come the TMNT 3 error print is noted? Simply because it was well known leading up to the ‘85 con?

Great questions, but above my paygrade, so to speak.

I'm afraid I don't know myself.  I think you can ask CGC on the boards somewhere, or at least that used to be a thing.

It does change though, which is nice.  The All Detergent variant of ASM 184 for years was listed as a No Price variant, until I have noticed recently CGC properly identifies it.  Progress.

Here's my old copy:

Printing errors aren't variants by definition, so CGC should never refer to them as such. Some error books take on mythical status in the hobby though (ASM #149 for example / FF #110), so I can see why a company as lax as CGC would adopt the term for high profile books. They're not very good at ascribing terminology / nomenclature in my opinion.

I agree significant printing errors could be noted on the CGC label - especially if the error is internal - but the word 'variant' should not be used. 'Printing Error' would suffice, and be factually accurate.

Is it this one Eric - a few issues later, though:

I wouldn't find those significant enough to warrant a label mention myself.

This, I would:

I don’t think it’s that one I wanna say it’s the one with yellow background and multiple images of him leapin? 187? Memory failing me

And I agree calling it an error on the label vs variant makes more sense. It does seem certain high value books get love and one like the ASM 194 might get such description some day because it’s already a key book.

Sounds like annual #2, Eric   annual2.thumb.jpg.def021edfd888b997117f0ffece5ca48.jpg

You probably mean this one though, for which I've never seen an error copy:

Show us it if you have one.

I did have a 187 misprint though, of sorts:

I swear I had another…it was 185 I was thinking, the graduation issue with yellow background but I was confusing with 187. But my 185 is fine so maybe it’s just the above or maybe it’s on another book….

Yep, 185 had some white blob shenanigans too...

Haha figured you would have seen in your quests! And no miscut (it’s on my photo ledge so bottom lip cuts of the bottom bit of comic when I set it on the ledge.

Ah ha! My memory was right. I must have had a copy and sold it because mine was VG and the one I have now is sharp so I must have upgraded and sold the error. Oh well
