A live-action Godzilla TV show set in the MonsterVerse is happening at Apple TV+. The MonsterVerse franchise kicked off back in 2014 with Gareth Edwards' Godzilla reboot. Despite quibbles about that film's human characters and lack of screen time for the titular monster (until the third act), Godzilla earned mostly positive reviews and grossed $524.9 million at the worldwide box office. That success paved the way for more MonsterVerse installments, including Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and last year's Godzilla vs. Kong - which was a big draw on HBO Max and in theaters.

These days, many tentpole franchises are looking beyond the big screen and taking advantage of the opportunities presented via streaming services. Marvel and Star Wars continue to expand their stories with TV shows on Disney+. HBO Max is complementing DC movies such as The Suicide Squad and The Batman with spinoff shows. Now, the MonsterVerse is the latest property to join in on the trend, bringing Godzilla to the small screen.

Collider reports a live-action Godzilla TV show is in the works for Apple TV+. The series will take place in the MonsterVerse. It does not have a title yet, but Apple did reveal a plot synopsis. Read it in the space below:

Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family's journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.

The Matt Fraction-co-created Godzilla TV series for Apple TV+ will apparently be going by Hourglass as a working title during production. The show will reportedly focus on the Monarch agency seen in the Legendary Pictures monsterverse franchise, the logo for which looks a bit like a stylized hourglass turned on its side, so in terms of resonating with the show, without giving everything away to passersby who might see signs on location, it's not a bad alias. The series was announced on Friday, with relatively few details attached. Riding high on the success of Godzilla vs. Kong, the series will apparently enter production soon.

According to Deadline, the as-yet-untitled series will follow one family's journey through a world where titans exist, and they'll come to discover their secret ties to Monarch along the way. At this point, there is no word on whether existing human characters in the Godzilla films will carry into the show, but we know for sure the King of the Monsters will show up.

So this is the Monarch TV show that was hinted at the previous year.

We'll see.

But it is interesting this show concept moved from HBO Max to Apple TV.

That has to be lower budget, right? Humans are literally the least interesting aspect of these monster movies, yet a lower budget surely means more pointless characters and exposition.

While I thought that King of the Monsters was somewhat good and fun, GvK just wasn't it for me. They've been getting worse and worse IMO. I really like the way that this Godzilla has been done, too.

Apple TV+'s Godzilla series has found its director in Matt Shakman. Since Godzilla vs. Kong was a box office hit, becoming one of the first major successes following the COVID-19 pandemic, Legendary Pictures has been looking to expand the MonsterVerse franchise in a big way. A sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong is in development with director Adam Wingard returning, and a Skull Island animated series is in the works at Netflix. On top of that, it was announced in January that Apple TV+ is developing a live-action Godzilla series. Reports have suggested The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's Wyatt Russell is being considered to play the lead.

According to Variety, WandaVision director Matt Shakman will direct the first two episodes of the planned Godzilla series. Shakman will also serve as executive producer. The series follows the aftermath of Godzilla's fight in San Francisco as the world discovers the existence of giant monsters. Much like the MonsterVerse's big screen adventures, the series will intersect with the mysterious Monarch organization.

Apple TV+ is developing its own live-action MonsterVerse show, and a first look at the project has just gone live.

The update comes from social media as the MonsterVerse team uploaded a first-look photo at the Apple TV+ show. As you can see below, the set photo shows some old-school tech and photos on a desk, but the real story comes courtesy of a Monarch bag.

New Godzilla TV Series Will Feature More Titans Than Expected

Quote

These days, the industry has put Godzilla center stage with its MonsterVerse franchise as new movies are in the work right now. There is also a live-action TV show in production at Apple TV+ under Matt Fraction and Chris Black. And now, we have learned the series is going to feature kaiju from all over the Godzillaverse.

The update comes from Matt Shakman, one of the TV creatives behind the MonsterVerse show. The producer spoke with Collider recently about The Consultant, and the topic of monsters came up. It was there Shakman dished some juicy details about the Godzilla show. For one, the kaiju will not be the only one discussed in the show, and this live-action outing will keep itself separate from everything happening in theaters with Legendary's movies.

"There is some overlap, though we were not heavily involved in talking about it with Adam Wingard and his team. Legendary is the studio for our show, as well as for the films, and so they sort of sit at the juncture there between the two, and they have a mythology department there which is wonderful," Shakman said about the show's place in the MonsterVerse. "They weigh in on how things might overlap, how certain creatures need to stay on one side or the other, and so there is a lot of conversation about it. But in terms of how closely the narratives overlap, it's not as involved to say, an MCU kind of Disney+ film crossover. It's less organized."

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Reveals Key Detail About Kurt Russel's Role

Quote

The kaiju are coming to the small screen with Apple TV+'s upcoming live-action series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. While the father/son actor team of Kurt and Wyatt Russell were confirmed to be a part of the series for quite some time, the television show has revealed new details about the character that the two will be portraying. Thanks to jumping to different time periods, it would seem that Kurt and Wyatt will be playing the same part in this Godzilla-focused series.

Aside from the Wyatt clan, the series will also star the likes of Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski. The series is brought to life by Legendary Television, the same company that has been responsible for creating North America's MonsterVerse. Clearly, Godzilla is slated to appear but the series has yet to confirm what other giant beasts, if any, will be making an appearance. With Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire arriving in theaters next year, perhaps the ruler of Skull Island might drop in.

The Russells will actually be playing the same character, Army Officer Lee Shaw. Taking place both in the 1950s and today, it seems doubtful Kurt and Wyatt will interact in the series unless the MonsterVerse decides to inject time travel into the story. In a description for the series, it would seem that the organization Monarch is gunning for Shaw thanks to what he knows about the kaiju universe.

When it comes to what kaiju fans can prepare for with the new live-action series, Apple teases Monarch: Legacy of Monsters as such, "Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters tracks two siblings following in their father's footsteps to uncover their family's connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga – spanning three generations – reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives."
