Harley has been attending Australian conventions since 1992. The last time I saw him was 2014 at Supanova in Sydney - the Stan Lee appearance.

Thank you! That makes my memory make sense. I'd always thought I'd dealt with Harley in person years ago, but thought that highly unlikely. Nice to know I'm not crazy. 

We were leaving Supernova one year, and on the way out a voice called out to me. For some reason I listened and went over, and it was Harley. He asked me if I liked X-Men. Hell yeah I did. Then he told what had happened. He had this absolutely beautiful, pristine copy of the issue where Phoenix dies, priced at $120. Straight away I'm thinking 'oh mess mate, you've picked the wrong guy, I'm so far over budget, I don't have even 120 right now that I'd be allowed to spend'. He was showing it to an interested customer, and this wanker misheld it, causing damage. Harley was devastated, and now wanted nothing to do with the book other than to get rid of it. It had a small colour-breaking crease in the bottom right corner, something there's just unfortunately no cure for. He offered it to me for $8. I snapped it up. It's been one of my favourite memories ever, because I got to meet Harley, even though I of course felt horrible for him and the circumstances behind the sale. He was far too kind, and should have made the other guy pay, imo

He had some other Silver Age offerings in a rummage box (I spend bad just spending $8 at his stall, but I didn't have much cash left over from the day that we'd agreed was spendable money). That's where I found and bought the Avengers #28 I've never seen since. It's like I never bought the book, even though I know I did. It's disappeared on me for the last 15 years. 

But yeah, great to know I did meet Harley. He was a really nice guy, and gave me such a nice deal on that book, thank you Harley.

One the legends. I used to buy from his catalogues all the time back in the 90s, and at the LA shows. I remember handing over a stack of  around 30 lower grade Dells to him at a show for trade that I'd gotten in a lot, I showed him a list of what I had, with the grades and the OSPG value total. He gave me a fair price in trade and didn't even look at the books themselves. That's trust. He also wouldn't write anything down on a trade credit, but remembered what he'd agreed upon even if it was at a later show. 

Another time he only had 1 $10 book I was interested in in his catalogue, and was coming to an LA show in a week or so, so I asked him to bring it to the show. He'd forgotten it when I saw him, and said he'd mail it to me for free. I offered him the $10 and he declined. I still have the book, a WAR #11 in around 3.5

Based on the good experiences other folks have had with Harley, I'll note that I purchased the Detective Comics 436 CGC 9.8 in a few of my registry sets from him and he mailed it to me before I had sent him my check payment. I promptly mailed him my payment and thanked him for trusting that I would do so. That trust is something that is priceless.

Way belated for a birthday wish, but this seemed to be the best place to post this. Got a real kick out of Harley’s cameo in the latest Love and Rockets!
