Axe Elf
Would anyone be interested in participating in a Warren Magazine Reading Club? I was thinking we could start with CREEPY #1, released January of 1965, give ourselves a week for each issue to read and discuss, and then progress through ten of Warren's best series in chronological order, as they were released in history. We can each bring our own knowledge and opinions to the table, sharing any little facts we might have learned or personal stories that go along with each issue, and after ten years, we'll have the greatest compendium of Warren knowledge and reviews in the known universe at our fingertips in this thread! CREEPY #1-#146 (+5 Yearbooks/Annuals) January 1965 - February 1983 EERIE #1-#139 (+3 Yearbook/Annuals) September 1965 - February 1983 BLAZING COMBAT #1-#4 October 1965 - July 1966 VAMPIRELLA #1-#113 (+1 Annual) October 1969 - February 1983 The SPIRIT #1-#16 April 1974 - October 1976 COMIX INTERNATIONAL #1-#5 July 1974 - April 1977 WARREN PRESENTS #1-#14 November 1977 - November 1981 1984/1994 #1-#29 June 1978 - February 1983 The ROOK #1-#14 November 1979 - April 1982 The GOBLIN #1-#3 June 1982 - October 1982 492 issues in all, 492 weeks of Warren. We'll wrap up on October 3, 2031. But of course no one HAS to participate every week... it will just be here for people who have the time and interest to participate each week as their time and interest allows. And everyone will be responsible for begging, borrowing, or buying their own copy for reading. If your copies are slabbed or you don't have a copy of the issue for that week, there are lots of sources for reading comics online. I'm sure with our collective resources, we won't have any trouble finding readers. So let me know if you're interested; I'd like to start May 1 with CREEPY #1, but if no one shows any interest, I won't bother to organize it any further. I would just like to read all of these myself, and if possible, to share the experience with other Warren fans, while preserving the sense of chronology through all the serials, and putting them into the historical perspective of the months in which they were released. I was born in March of 1963, so the Warren history kind of parallels the first 20 years of my own life, from January of 1965 through February of 1983. I'm going to relive my childhood through the eyes of Warren Publishing. (And if there IS interest, I'll change the question mark in the thread title to an exclamation point!) OtherEric
If you can get a few others to join, I would be interested, at least in the cases where I have the books- I think I've got over 200 of the issues you listed, so I would be able to join fairly regularly. I would eliminate the following books, though: Creepy & Eerie annuals, Comix International, and Warren presents. While I have no problem with us including all reprint issues in the mix... it's not worth the effort to avoid them, and some of the single creator issues near the end of the runs are amazing... I think we can drop the all-reprint titles from the mix. I'll make an exception for Spirit, since while those are all reprints they're new to Warren. OtherEric
Also, did we want to include the first 3 issues of Monster World in the mix, since they have the first Warren horror comics?

We will have plenty of time to make decisions on Comix International and Warren Presents; heck, we won't even be reading the first Vampirella until next June... As for the CREEPY and EERIE Yearbooks and Annuals, I wouldn't mind passing them if everyone else feels the same, but aren't there features (columns, fan mail, one-page art, even unique advertisements)--or facts--that would still be worth documenting? ::: shrugs ::: And like I said, nobody has to read something they don't want to... Anyway, we have time to iron out the details. I'd like to hear interest from, say, six people to get it started May 1? Axe Elf OtherEric That's two... It's a legitimate argument, but unfortunately, they are 3 that I don't have, so I'd have to sit out the first three weeks of my own book club. But I guess if someone has an online reader they can link me to, I'm game. OtherEric
OtherEric
Not sure on the Creepy/ Eerie Yearbooks having relevant new material; I know the Vampirella annual has a new story (even if it was re-scripted when they reprinted it in the main title later.) Check your PM's, by the way.
Axe Elf
If nothing else, the timeline is interesting... I'm not exactly sure what months the Yearbooks/Annuals were released. Some of them say "Summer/Fall," so I put them all in August, which I kind of like--look at what happened right after August 1969 (if that is in fact when the 1970 Yearbooks came out)--CREEPY #32, EERIE #23, and VAMPIRELLA #1!!! Kind of a collector's trifecta in that one round! I also don't know release dates beyond the month of the release, so within the same month, I listed them in the order that their titles first appeared--so if an EERIE and a SPIRIT were released in the same month, I listed the EERIE first. Anyway, here is what I think is the rough chronological order of the books as they were released, and the start date of the week in which they would be featured in this thread (if all the titles I suggested are included): NOTE: Click on the title of any issue (for any current or past week) to be taken directly to the discussion of that issue! Axe Elf
September 1979, October 1980, and October 1981... the only times that the Warren offices ever cranked out six publications in a single month.
OtherEric
The Vampirella Annual came out between #13 and #14, going by the back issue ads in those issues. I suspect you could get precise positioning on the Creepy/ Eerie annuals the same way for at least some of them, if you dug through the issues. It appears to have come out after #12, which we know was released in July of 1971. Vampirella #13 wasn't released until September, so I'm not sure why the ad would say "Available in June 1971"--unless that was when pre-orders opened? In which case the Yearbook being available in July isn't necessarily a release date, either. Given the known release dates of #12 and #13, I'm comfortable saying that all the Yearbooks/Annuals were released "around" August, so that's where I put them in the order. If it's off by week or two here or there, I'm not going to stress over it--but if someone has hard and fast knowledge on this, I'm willing to listen. Axe Elf
Update: the back cover of Vampi #17 lists back issues, with the Annual coming between #12 and #13. So knowing that those were released in July and September of 1971, respectively, August 1971 is a good guess for the Annual. I suppose I could dig through and find back issue ads for Creepy and Eerie too, if I ever get the motivation, but for now I'll just leave "Summer/Fall" as August. My list doesn't go by the actual RELEASE dates; it goes by the months listed on the index page of the books themselves--so Vampirella #12 "self-identifies" as "July 1971" and Vampirella #13 self-identifies as "September 1971." So THAT's where I was getting the months for the timeline, not from the date they were actually released (much like a 1972 car was released in 1971... but it's still a 1972 car). You are technically correct that those are not "release dates." I'm just going to continue to go by the dates on the magazines themselves for the purpose of this exercise, because 1) it would be a lot of work to go through and look up all the actual release dates, and 2) it probably wouldn't really change the overall order that much (other than maybe the placement of the annuals)--it might just move them all up a month or something. So more work than it's worth, but a valid observation. OtherEric

You are quite right that it's more work than it's worth. The only reason I was concerned on the Vampi Annual is that it's the only Warren Annual with a new story; but even then it's set on Draculon, rather than between the issues it shipped between. L Ludwig
I don't have the comprehensive library but I am extremely interested in participating as I can. The educational value here is excellent and appreciated. OtherEric
OtherEric
I think we should go for it even if there are only three of us to start; I bet we get more participation once it actually begins The Lions Den
Axe Elf
Yeah, I'm down. I know it will help keep me on schedule to read one a week if others are reading along with me, but I'm going to try to read them all anyway; I might as well talk about them. People can chime in or ignore the thread as they see fit. So I guess if you want to play along, do what you can to get yourself a readable copy of CREEPY #1, and we will start discussing it in the first week of May. I'm hoping that I can modify the weekly schedule table posted above to include a link to the first post concerning each issue as we build this thread along. Then anyone who happens through the thread can easily find the discussion regarding any particular issue.
OtherEric
I've got my notes on Creepy #1 ready to go for tomorrow, but will wait for @Axe Elf to start things off since they created the group. Looking forward to it!
