OK, snuck a box in tonight after coin club.  I grabbed the first Marvel box I could get to - and it was my least favorite so far.  Most of the box got stickered $2-$3 with only a few minor upticks (6-8-10 etc).  I didn't find much even interesting personally, which is amazing to me seeing how much I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix
Alpha Flight, specials, annuals, 4x copies of #51 First Jim Lee work at Marvel
The Amazing Spider-Man: (Sets of 4) Skating on Thin Ice, Double Trouble, Hit & Run, Chaos in Calgary
- Several '93-'94 Spidey issues and annuals - Mostly $3-$4 stuff
A random The Astonishing X-Men
Avengers - Late 80's to early 90's all common stuff except
- #293 1st Appearance of Chairman Kang, Kang Cobra, Kang-Nebula
- #314 Spider-Man Appearance, Sersi joins Avengers team
- #315 Spider-Man, Space Pirate (Nebula) Appearance
- #350 Avengers vs the Starjammers / Sersi and Black Knight Kiss (9 copies 9.4=$15?)
Avengers Spotlight
West Coast Avengers ('85)
Avengers West Coast ('89)
Barbie Fashion
Battle Tide
Beavis and Butt-Head (These both surprised me and brought back good memories)
Bishop
Black Panther ('88)
Blackwulf
Bloodseed
Body Count (Marvel UK)
James Bond Jr.
Brute Force (#1 was a semi)
Buckaroo Banzai
Cable (Had three #3 1st Apperance of Weasel)
Cage

Some of you seem to enjoy what I find, even the crud, if for nothing else, reminds you of a title you probably haven't thought of or cared to think of for decades lol.  I love the little nuggets of info just the appearance of a title makes you guys remember, and love the tidbits you share with me.  Sorry for a boring box, I'll grab an Indie tomorrow.

@Beige - I have a few boxes of manga (Think I called them Anime at first).  Some are in the adult section, some I don't think are, but until I get to them and open a few books up, not really sure what they are, just going by the cover art.

@Lazyboy - I still have 39 boxes to go through, and I've only peeked into a few from the pile my wife wants gone first, but don't remember a Robin yet

Yup, a TON of unexciting stuff.  Remember... this is what was leftover after going out of business sales and clearance sales at his shop.  I would imagine if nobody wanted to buy it 30 years ago, they probably won't today either lol.  That Aquaman I found last night was priced at $22 30 years ago and nobody bought it.  All good - I'm still having a blast learning all this stuff.  You should have heard me at coin club tonight talking with my coin friends and those who know about this from the coin show - it's all I talked about - I found xyz, the forum folks showed me how to look for special this or art by that, and info from the 100+ PMs I've gotten - I think by the time the coin auction started they were tired of hearing about comic books.  I truly am enjoying this.

Months from now when the initial sort is done and I can digest what I've learned I can see myself starting to collect some of these.  Surprisingly, so far, I really like the indie type things more so than the mainstream ones, but really need to find time to read them to see what direction I go.

I took the 1st 5 boxes I had processed down to the shop today.  They did a Facebook post with a picture, something like "40 more boxes of comics still to come soon but we have these to look through now - some 1960's through early 1990's".   See how it goes.  The handful that were over $20 went into the case with my other stuff I sell there (Coins, cards, antiques, etc) but the bulk boxes are out for customers to flip through.

Some of those Barbie Fashion books are worth looking into, as well as the regular Barbie series. BF #13 has a sexy DC Showcase Dolphin tribute cover by Amanda Conner, can sell $15-$20 in decent shape, and more like $50+ if still sealed and in nice condition. BF 39 & 46 are others than can sell for $20+, as they are considered Good Girl Art by some collectors. Honestly, any cover where she's in a bikini, some perv (like me) will pay up for it if it's in good shape. This will often apply to Archie covers as well.

Haha - I was reading the subforum with the returned from CGC items and saw a few folks who seem to like that type of stuff.

If you're a perv, you'll probably love the many boxes of adult stuff I have yet to dig into...

I'm sure I would! And has been mentioned before, adult books can sell like wildfire. There's demand for the Fantagraphics Eros line of books, as well as the old fashioned undergrounds like Cherry, and their ilk. The only problem with the adult stuff is that it can be difficult to find venues in which to sell the material, as eBay restricts this material to Adults Only areas, which is a death sentence for sales. But if you're not selling online anyway, this may not be a problem. And of course, you can always sell them here. I've done well with some of that stuff here. Can't wait to see what all you dig up!

Feebay removed its Adult Section.  I bought the Thorne and Manara comics I could before they tore it down (sometime last year?).  You will still find adult comics listed, but most likely without photos (or the photo will be censored).

Oh, well there you go! Even harder to list the stuff now! I tried on and off over the years to list adult comix in the normal section, using various methods of censorship. Some sailed through, but I got my hand slapped enough that it's no longer worth it to try.

I told the guys at the coin shop if anyone looks at the comics and wants something specific to make a list and I'd try to find that box next.  He just texted me to bring the adult stuff next, so guess I'm getting to them tomorrow.  Took a vacation day to do them when the kids are in school - the little ones aren't ready for that conversation yet.

I did manage to resort the piles in the house and group them together.  Here's what's left:

10 - DC
10 - Indie (1 is Bongo/Whitman - kids type things)
8.5 - Marvel
6 - he just labeled "Sets" (Mixture of publishers - bigger bags with small runs/sets put together)
4 - Adult (2 porn for sure, 2 manga that may be, not sure yet)
.5 - Big Book of xyz - thicker soft cover books

I got an indie box out ready for tonight that continues where the Dark Horse left off on the last indie box.

Tonight's box was labeled Indie D-E. Lot of titles because many were only one or a few issues.

I was a bit surprised that most of the Eclipse titles sold very well on eBay.  I read their Wiki entry real quick about their movements, flood losing their backstock, bankrupt and Todd McFarlane buying the rights to their work.  Interesting history.

I liked a lot of the cover art in this box.  Overall some solid things in here - no home runs, but decent average price for the box

OK, got through just 1 of the 4 boxes of adult comics, which took me 3 hours.

I gave up on the price guides, most that even had them say NM were $3.  The vast majority of these were between $10-$25 and many over $50, some even in the $100-$200 range and one crazy one I'll ask about at the end.

Some you can find on eBay or Amazon, but usually using google first not from their own searches to get past the adult filter stuff.  Some I had to go off of private comic/book sites, etc.

Didn't know porn could pay off like this, but as-priced, this whole box is more than I paid for the lot - now I just have to sell them.

I'm pretty sure the adult comics were his own personal stash which he kept getting after the shop closed.

Here were the titles in this box:

Wow @Qalyar you really know your stuff, thank you so so much for all the info, I'll double-check the specific ones you mentioned.

I didn't see any signs of any of them being opened/used and would call them all NM at first glance without a detailed inspection.  I think I got most of them in the pricing ballpark - a lot like this where I'm in them let's call it 3/$1 If I marked it $15 and it's really a $20 or $25 book, I'm not going to be upset.  Marking it $15 when it was an $80 book is really all I'm trying to avoid.

He has another whole box and a half like this box with a hodge-podge of titles no question adult.  The other box and a half look to be mostly: Lum Urusei Yatsura, Maison Ikkoku, and Ranma 1/2.  The covers on those don't look too adult, but I didn't open them yet, so not sure - may just be normal manga but since they were together, didn't open them with the little ones around.

I try to keep informed on indie stuff, even -- like most of the adult material -- when it isn't stuff I personally own or collect.

Lum / Urusei Yatsura (under various titles), Maison Ikkoku, and Ranma 1/2 are not at all adult titles, for the record. Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku are both essentially romantic comedies; they were also both pretty heavily printed and tend to be cover-price-or-less sorts of books. Ranma 1/2 is a genre-defying (romantic martial-arts comedy magical adventure, maybe?) gigantic series (120+ issues, all told), most of which are also cover-price material. However, there are a few Ranma books to look out for. Ranma numbering is divided into parts, so you have Ranma 1/2 Part 01 #1-7, then Ranma 1/2 Part 02 #1-11, and so forth. For whatever reason, Viz Media opted to release Part 12 as a single abridged version of the original story arc. Ranma 1/2 Part 12 #1 is a 64-page double-sized issue, so it's pretty easy to spot. Anecdotally, print runs were lower and sales were tepid. It's definitely a tougher book to locate but even then, it's just a $5-7.50 sort of item. It's also a 2003 release, so likely won't be in your boxes. But the real winners for Ranma are the first three English issues. Ranma 1/2 Part 01 #1-3 were all printed in full color by Viz; they were -- and are -- the only full-color printings of any of the story (including the graphic novels). They're also really easy to identify, because they have a band at the top of the front cover that reads "VIZ SELECT COMICS ALL COLOR". Especially in the NM-/NM range, those three issues are pretty solid $15-20 books.

He did tell me he continued to collect some things after the shop closed and thinking back where he pointed in the storage room, I thought it was the adult stuff.  But with these mingled in with them, maybe these as well.  I checked the box, he has them grouped by the parts, and sure enough:

1736318807_Half1.thumb.jpeg.844b4a1da5e5ac5dd14919093179bc3d.jpeg

and

1069398689_Half2.thumb.jpeg.c5bc03779fa31a0ab12a33ed07052cbd.jpeg

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with me.  Been really impressed with the membership here and their willingness to help me and I'm sure I'm looked upon as a newbie-extreme way over his head, but I'm trying...

EDIT - Something else I just noticed is none of these had price tags (and only maybe 2 in that whole adult box did as well, but older probably how he bought them) so these likely are what he referred to as things he collected.

Very nice. Those first 3 Ranma 1/2 issues, in particular, are surprisingly elusive books! Demand for them stays pretty high because, like I said, the trade paperback collections didn't reprint them in color.

If there's a lot of Viz-published anime in there, other books that are worth more than bulk prices include Battle Angel Alita (probably $7-8 a book for the whole thing), Dragon Ball (early books are maybe $25, most of the run is $8-10 apiece), and some of the Pokemon stuff. Pokemon Part 1 The Electric Tale of Pikachu #1 can be a particularly high dollar book depending on printing. With some of these Viz books (although not Ranma, so you're good there), it's important to check the indicia for second (or later...) printings. All the Dragon Ball books got reprints that are worth quite a bit less than the originals, and the early Pokemon books have been serially reprinted -- I want to say Pokemon Part 1 The Electric Tale of Pikachu #1 has something like 14 printings? Generally, #1 is the most valuable (by quite a bit), but some of the later printings were mostly sold through nonstandard channels and are actually very scarce... if you find the right specialist buyer.

I dug out the indie "V" box with Viz Select, but none of those.   Just a few Fire Tripper, Lum, Maison Ikkoku, Mermaid Forest and Ranma 1/2.  These ones were individually priced, probably his doubles, including 4 more of the colored Ranma 1/2 (1/2/2/3).  There may be some in what he called "Sets" boxes, as I do remember the Mermaid Forest in there, but those are buried.  I don't remember too many more cartooney type things besides his box of Simpsons, Animaniacs, Pinky & The Brain and some WB things - those were mid-late 90's so think that is a box that came from his friend's other store, the price-tags are all different from the main batch.

Now I have to figure out what box to work on tonight.  Going through some of the DC/Marvel boxes with mostly Superman, Batman, Hulk, Iron Man, etc doesn't excite me at this point.

Just remember Ocean Master! $ in those Big Two boxes. But DC/Marvel is not as fun to learn about, I agree. You have so much of what we call "drek", non-valuable comics, but you are okay even there as you have the outlets to let them sit and sell gradually and at low prices if necessary. There were times you posted a box and I was worried every box was going to be like that. Many of the comics you mention are not good sellers ONLINE but you'll be fine with them on the floor of a booth and venues like you talked about having available. Then you have enough good value books to pull people in. Without the antique mall or your coin connections this would be a tough purchase for a new seller but you have the sales experience and sales venues to do very well, even with Shadow State, Lady Justice, Aquaman etc (generally not the greatest sellers). complete series sets and runs of consecutive issues are good ways to move the cheap ones...get them out of your hair as quickly as you can. Maybe put a box in the antique mall "whole box of comics $X" or have 4 boxes out and a sign with 25/$15 or whatever, blow out that drek. Don't sell all the good ones quickly to get your money back and be left with the volume, try to do the opposite...move volume quickly and sell better books at max value.

put a sign at the antique mall booth "new boxes 15th of every month" "new box every week" or such to keep people coming back and looking again. Keep the box of valuable ones there all the time (add to it as you go) and cycle through cheaper ones.

I'm full of free unsolicited and mostly untried advice.
