GI Joe actually did it first and for the same reason.  Hasbro based the terrorist organization Cobra as having an American foothold in the town of Springfield, but never providing any further indication as to what state it was in unlike GI Joe where the original base of operations was in Staten Island, NY and then later on in Nevada.

It was never as fervent as the Simpsons version.  This is pretty cool.

It was an Alien that was impersonating Mr.Burns or something like that

Mr Burns undergoes a series of medical treatments designed to help him cheat death for another week. These treatments include: a spinal adjustment, eye-drops, painkillers, and a vocal cord scraping. The whole ordeal leaves Mr Burns twisted, disorientated, and with a sweet heavenly voice (due respectively to the anesthesia and throat-work). He's allowed, by the incompetent Dr. Nick, to leave the hospital and wander around in the woods. The green glow's a result of Burns spending a lifetime working in a nuclear power plant.

Most of them are in the old downtown Main Street area.   Bout 4 miles from the IHOP.   It's a slow renovation area, but there is progress.  I hear an In n Out Burger may be coming to Springfield too.  Somewhere in that Gateway area

Thanks for this thread!  Next time I visit my family in Eugene, I will have to check the murals out.   Not a secret Groenig was inspired by Springfield, Oregon (which back then was viewed as a loser's town) and the Nuclear facilities near Portland (Trojan nuclear power plant and the Hanford nuclear site).  Groenig had referenced it more than once over the years, and many characters are named after streets in Portland (and the Simpson's street is named after the street where he grew up).  But the murals are news to me!  Thanks again!
