Overwhelmed with inherited trading cards
5 5

28 posts in this topic

Hello all. I have inherited roughly 5,000 trading cards from my father spanning over about 8 card binders. They range from Star Wars to Marvel to DC to old boxing cards to 1979s Topps Chewing Gum.

From what I can see they are mostly complete sets and in near perfect condition.

I have taken over 500 photos of them all and curious where I should go from here and if I have any gems hiding inside. Where is the best place to upload the images? Is it better to sell them as a complete set or individually?

thanks for all and any help!

Except for the sports cards.  I'm not sure if you can sell those here. (shrug)

Thanks! Do you know of a forum here where I can post my collection to see if any of them are worth something? Still not sure if I should sell as complete sets or singles.

This would be the place to start.  I would refer to @CGC Mike on this because I’m not familiar with this forum.  I’ve been selling cards in the Mixed sales thread because the trading card forums didn’t really exist back then.

How about this thread?  Ir, you could start a different one in this same forum.   Keep in mind that it is acceptable to ask questions about value, selling in lots, or if certain cards should be graded or not.  However, it is not ok to try and solicit sales in the regular forum.  We do have a marketplace for that, or there are plenty of other venues.  I should also note that it would not be ok to ask these types of questions in the marketplace, because that is only for selling, want to buy ads or placing links to listed items on Ebay, Heritage or other places outside of this forum.

I hope this helps,

Mike

If nothing else since you already have the pictures, maybe post them here to show what all you have .

I know I am interested to see what all is in the collection.

The 1979 Marvel Topps bubble gum cards will be well received. They are prized items now esp in decent shape.

It was difficult to take photos of the hologram card so if you need a specific picture of one just let me know. Also if you see multiples of the same card it means there are duplicates.

From what I see most of these you shouldn't  have too much trouble selling.  If you are looking for idea of value, I would look up each set on ebay and sort by recently sold to get an idea of current value.

I do know the Marvel sets have been doing well. Especially the ones where you have the full  insert sets as well.

Sorry for your loss. Can you share how your father came to collect these?

My dad collected all of these before I was old enough to know what they are. I knew he was always a huge fan of big boxing matches, followed high school wrestling, and enjoyed some DC/Marvel shows and comics. He once told me he had a collection of trading cards but never understood the extent of it until recently.

Very generally, since you seem to be unfamiliar with the cards, it probably makes the most sense to sell in individual sets when possible.  HOWEVER, you really really need to make sure the sets are complete (if you are saying they are complete).

I don't know about anyone else, but I went right to the Star Wars cards to see if the OP had the C3PO "error" card.  It's there!  (photo #48, lower left)

While not worth a huge fortune, it's definitely one of the more notable cards of the set!

So you went straight for the C3PO wang?

:baiting:

:roflmao:

LMAO

Thanks for the chuckle, had no idea these even existed. And looks I have two of them.

I've also been doing some of my own homework and a lot of the Marvel hologram sets are worth a decent penny. A few of the 6 card sets can be found sold around $60-80.
