Show Your 3 Ring Binder Hole Punched Comics

I think hole punches are cool.  So many of those books are in great condition, probably because a comic book lover punched them and stored them in a binder.

I put hole punches in the same category as written names and date stamps on covers.  All cool.

The vast majority of books in this thready are in really nice shape except for the holes. In the days before bags and boards, in order to preserve it you had to damage it. Quite a conundrum.

I once was at an auction and there were several boxes of atomic age and pre code books like this some were 3/4th covers as well. Came from a drug store and forgotten in the back room.

Many/most of today's younger collectors may not realize that, in the 1950s, remaindered comics (both the stripped-logo and coverless varieties) were sold openly in "five & dime" type variety stores.  The business was big enough that special boxes were manufactured for counter and/or shelf display.  Here's just one version:

True dat!  (thumbsu  Like you, acceptability varies as a function of rarity and cost.  I think my #1 pet peeve is tape.  I simply hate tape.  :censored:  But insect and rat chews generally don't bother me as long at the book is newsstand fresh.  If they did, I would not have these:

That being said, I do have my limits -- even if the book is a pedigree!  :whatthe:  :whatthe:  :whatthe:

Ha, those are pretty harsh Jay. What a shame. I do remember buying a couple of much less “rat damaged” River Cities from you a while back.

This thread really blew up! Some great books and info. Interesting to learn that some of these were file or remainder copies.

Amazing books here that I would love to have in my collection! Especially that CSS 22! (worship)

Found some more Daredevils...

That 10-day "All River City Sale" was a lot of fun.  Brian and I appreciated the strong support we received from you and all our other clients.  :foryou:  (worship)

Sure was. A rare opportunity to score some affordable copies of books I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to get otherwise.

Sure miss seeing Brian and you good folks at A-1 down here in SO CA at shows…:sorry:

Those names don't mean anything to me, but I assume you used them for a reason, so they must be worth something to someone.

If it was Douglas Hofstadter or Larry Norman, I might be more interested--I was talking about some random "MIke" or something...

Seems like the holes would interfere with reading them, but I guess people aren't buying comics to read them any more.

That’s not true at all. There are MANY collectors who actually read, handle and enjoy their books. Even on the real high end ones. The punch holes almost always go into the margins and do not affect the story of art.

You are obviously not a GA guy if you have never heard of Lamont Larson. Google him. You say you are new to the hobby. Welcome, it’s a load of fun. We all started where you are. Hang around and read these boards. A lot of fine folks with so much valuable info to give you.

Yeah, I'm just kind of a specialist.  Six months ago I didn't collect anything at all (in the comics world, anyway).  Now I just collect the Warren mags.  Maybe someday it will be something else, but I don't have much interest or knowledge outside of that circle for now.  So I pick things up as people are willing to talk about them, but I don't have the kind of interest that would drive me to google a name.

But right now, if there was a big "LAMONT LARSON" across the face of my otherwise pristine EERIE #17, I'd probably be pretty torqued about it.

Not usually. You're just used to Modern comics that have no gutters.

See above.  I wouldn't call the Warren catalog "Modern."  But I do enjoy the fact that the art in them isn't always contained in the panels, and occasionally spills into the margins.  I'd hate to have a decapitated head flying off the page with a big hole in its face.

Warrens had the gutters too.

My point exactly.
