PGM Avengers #1

I asked a question in the Avengers #1 club about how apparently books with worse looking covers could get higher grades than others that looked like they had an easier life. @grendelbo and @KCOComics encouraged me to post my (beat-up) Avengers 1 here. The back story is that I bought this and other books off dealers in the '70s who saw the chance to unload low grade copies on me as an international customer.

Anyway, here it is (bought as VG in the '70s but obviously a long way from that grade). The issue is where in the 1.8 to 2.5 range would it fall? The FC is better than the 2.5 in the Av1 thread, but the BC let's it down.

I'll call it a 2.0.

The front cover really presents well. The colors look great. A press may help improve some of the creases, though I would be nervous about pressing that spine.

Like you said, the back cover brings it down.

2.0

Anything under a 2.0 is pretty beat up. This copy has had quite a journey since publication but it's still intact and presentable (from the front).

Reminds me a lot of my own copy. I wonder about it's travels.

2.0 sounds reasonable to me. If the back was better, maybe a 2.5 with the front cover. This looks like the condition of the comics I read over and over in the late 70s and early 80s. Presentable in a lot of ways, but wouldn't be that collectible except that its's an important book.

I've seen worse 2.0s. This gets a 2.0 from me. You lucky fella! Bought from a UK seller? (Grading standards are generally appalling in the UK, especially on eBay and the like. If it's still got both covers after the dog has chewed it, it still has a shot at 9.8)

No, USA seller whose ads featured in Marvel books at the time. No UK dealers did AFAIK.
