8.5 for light creasing to cover?

I just got my Miles Morales Spider-Man 1 modern book back, it was never read and untouched.  The only note was light creasing to cover and it received a 8.5?

The president of CGC and the founder of CCS would like all books pressed before submitting. Higher grade books with more subtle defects will benefit and will receive better grades.

"Never read and untouched" doesn't mean that it's automatically a 9.8. Most books off the shelf seem to be about 9.0-9.4. So, if a fresh book has creasing, an 8.5 sounds like a reasonable grade to me.

You say that you got the book back, so can you take pictures?

As you can see no crease and it’s labeled wrong on the back. Says ultimate Spider-Man 241.

Always a possibility they made a mistake, wrong book, wrong grade, etc.  And if it's mislabeled I think you can get a free reholder, at which point the grade ought to be verified.  You need to call CGC.  But do it soon because they put time limits on the free reholder.

Um. Top left of the back cover has a huge non-color breaking crease. I don't think it is an artifact from the light.

Isn't that the Legacy numbering?

Makes sense to me.

Looks to be labeled correctly front and back.  That spine crease could be the whole length of the book, just not showing because the light is only reflecting from the top section.

But to pull a book out the 9.x range into VF for a mild bend does seem a bit harsh.  Usually for VF you would expect some type of small visible color-breaking crease(s), a small fold, small chip, etc., actual wear.

Mild spine roll alone, as the only defect, shouldn't push it out of NM, imo.

The spine corners have wear visible from the front cover, especially at the bottom.  While it's hard to judge just from the photo, that might be enough on its own to knock the grade down to 9.4 or even 9.2.
