For Amazing Adult Fantasy #8 - Steve Ditko would do the cover (signed S. Ditko), the contents page (signed Stan Lee and S. Ditko), FIVE stories (all signed Stan lee & S. Ditko), and the coming attractions page (which we should be able to figure out by now who that's done by...)

The way that cover  just explodes. Fantastic....remember everything seemed bigger when you were smaller ..what kid could turn that book down....it really stands out in the crowd . We are at the start of the Stan Lee hype....but again that feedback helped create a buzz among collectors.

I'll bet it did! There was nothing like it at the time...

Its masterful how Stan utilized the rabid fan base that was already in place... and they in turn would remain loyal to him forever... he'd even hire one as his right hand man!

ON NEWSSTANDS SEPTEMBER 1961

For Tales to Astonish #27 - Kirby did the cover and wrote and penciled this story (all inked by D. Ayers and thus, missing a signature), featuring the 1st appearance of Henry Pym. One twist of a story and it becomes a Marvel Superhero, and nowhere is this more evident of that than Henry Pym... he would return a few months later...

Strangely, there is no ad at the bottom of the last page for the Fantastic Four in Kirby's story, but rather at the end of Bob Forgione's story...

For Tales of Suspense #25 - Kirby did the cover (inked by George Klein) and wrote and penciled two stories. There is an ad at the bottom of the last page for the Fantastic Four.

I'm not convinced this is D. Ayers inking. I think it might be Kirby inking himself...

Story ONE (inked by D. Ayers):

This caption really sounds like the same voice as you heard over the years in the Spider's Web or Fantastic 4 Fan Page letter columns.  And I doubt it is Ditko's.  Ditko was likely a young Objectivist by this time, and so he would not have found this joke particularly funny.  It does seem like the books from August/September 1961 are starting to show us the origin of Smilin' Stan.
