I post it all!! Or intend to- I’m a bit backed up at the moment. And I think everyone should .. here is my reasoning

1) it’s easy to track, sort, look at etc. you can see when you got a piece , what it cost and even gives you a peek into your thoughts when you got it if you do a write up

2) I like looking at other peoples art so why shouldn’t they see mine! Sharing is a fun part of the hobby

3) if you have certain focus people will start to offer things you may like that were not necessarily for sale publicly 

4) it’s fun.. rearranging galleries or changing featured pieces gives another layer to hobby engagement 

5) to all those “I hate getting emails about stuff that isn’t for sale” I say boo to that.. I ignore all kinds of other spam email so why not this, also like someone else said you never know what that guy asking has? You may want what he has more than yours . And lastly I recently had a personal issue where I needed to raise a nice chunk of funds- so instead of scrambling to sell something I had a nice Rolodex of people who would make a fair offer on a piece I maybe didn’t want to sell but now needed to.

I have not posted all of my art on CAF.  Whenever I do post, it could be a piece I've had for anywhere between 2 weeks to when I started collecting.

Why ?? Not sure.  I post because art should be seen.  But I don't feel the need to show all of it. 

I've seen that some CAF members will post art for a short amount of time (not for sale) and then take down the art.

I have posted about 85% of my collection. I have been collecting since 1986 so there are some of my earlier piece I haven’t posted along with later more obscure artwork. Every once and a while I discover something which isn’t on CAF and will post. I enjoy sharing my collection and seeing what others own.

I got to thinking and I wonder if some of mine, or other’s reluctance, might be from previous general comments made when a particular page publicly sells. Like “paid too much”, “can’t believe that page went for so ….(insert “little” or a “lot”), or “that’s not a very good example “ etc.  etc  

I’m all for sharing, but it’s just as easy to keep a digital record on a phone or computer as it is on a public website ( for the record keeping part). 
 

that said I do love to browse the caf, so maybe I will post more down the road.

I’ve been collecting original comic art since about 1991 when I was able to buy about a dozen pages from the Sotheby’s original art sale. Since then I’ve focused primarily on J. Buscema, Norem and Krenkel. Plus whatever else met my fancy and wallet. Never had a CAF page and have no plans to get one as the boards are more than enough “social media” for me.

I pretty much post everything I got on CAF.  Sometimes, when I have visitors wanting to look at art I collect, it's easier to use CAF as a resource for viewing my collection . . . rather than handle the stored-away originals.

I post the majority of art I get on CAF. I think sharing is the best part of the hobby. I do think it's fun to keep some pieces in reserve to post later and keep conversations going during periods I may be buying less art. I also don't feel any urgency to post some of my smaller pieces. Those can be fun to save to share at in person gatherings as well. One somewhat odd disadvantage to posting I've run into is that I have 1 piece posted that is singularly more desirable than anything else in my collection. Almost without fail, it's inquired about if I ever engage in a trade / sale conversation even if the value disparity is exponential. This has made for a few awkward interactions and possibly in a case or two scuttled a deal. That was something I did not anticipate when sharing the piece and makes me regret I did somewhat.

I don't recall seeing comments re: price on CAF.  Definitely not as much as on these boards.

I posted everything until 2014, but since then posting fairly regularly on a bi-weekly cadence— so 25-30 pieces each year— while acquiring around twice as many. Currently, I have roughly 35% posted on CAF with most of my Top 25 kept private for now.

I really enjoy the process of selecting and describing each CAF posting,. Also, I typically wait 6-12 months before posting any piece so I feel more confident it’s a “keeper” rather than “placeholder” waiting for upgrade.

This is a philosophy that I've been trying to abide by and it's made the experience much more enjoyable. I always had a sense of discomfort or guilt posting something that inevitably ended up being a short term placeholder.

 

In my experience, there are two main reasons people aren't posting things (aside from collecting so much you just don't have time to post everything)..

1. Unsolicited offers get under their skin and ruin the experience because people incorrectly think everyone abides by the same morals, ethics and courtesy.

Personally, I've found that not responding to unsolicited offers (or just saying "no thank you") and moving on works, since I can choose how to react to these offers. If they are persistent, I am also persistent (with not responding or being candid and saying No.). I also get a sense of pride in my collection if I have pieces that anyone else wants. I also recognize that there are many excited collectors who do not share my level of morals, ethics or courtesy and by having a gallery on CAF I'm accepting the responsibility of having interactions with them.

 

2. People think they collect subpar or bad art because they don't receive the views/likes/comments on their pieces they are hoping for.

Time after time I've talked to collectors who've complained about engagement on their pieces, yet when looking into their gallery I find they reply to comments on their own pieces only (padding comments on their pieces) and/or never comment on other people's pieces. So they expect people to come to them but they don't want to put in the time themselves. Which I think is a bit shortsighted.

I will routinely search titles and artists I like and leave some likes/ comments on pieces. I'll also go back through to people who have comment on my pieces of the years and check back into their galleries and leave a comment or two if I see pieces I like. Sometimes (I'll admit) I even leave comments on pieces "in hopes" that they will say "who's this person?" and then check into my gallery and maybe leave a comment on one of my pieces. But the key is I never expect reciprocation, I just hope the person will appreciate it in some way.

I use to post a lot of my stuff mostly because I liked sharing it, seeing comments, etc. but stopped and actually pulled most stuff.  My reasoning is it got tiresome from the DMs from people saying stuff like "this pieces isn't really good but I will take it off your hands for $xxx which you should be glad to get plus you have other examples", "wow, I have wanted that piece for over 20 years, would you part with it for $xx?"  I sold one piece to a guy for almost nothing because he had the page before mine and it would complete his collecting goals only to watch the two pieces be auctioned on CLINK a couple of months later.

Any Phantom Stranger art? It's not going anywhere; I've had pieces for over 40 years.
