I don’t understand why my Wolverine #1 got 9.0

This is my first time submitting books to CGC. I submitted 9 books total and have gotten 8 grades back so far. Most of the grades made sense to me generally. I was hoping for at least one 9.8 but didn’t get one.

The one book I was surprised didn’t do better was my copy of Wolverine #1. It received a 9.0 WHITE — No grader notes.

Below are the pics I took before I submitted them to CFP for pressing. I don’t have it back yet so let’s just assume for now that the book did not get damaged somewhere along the way.

I do not claim to be an expert but I was very surprised this didn’t get at least a 9.2 and maybe a 9.4. It has a very small color breaking crease on the back cover, bottom left corner, but a 9.0 feels harsh to me. Thoughts?

appears to be a big 'ol fingerprint or color rub on the top left corner of the bc...unless it's artifact from the pics?

Man, I think you’re right. I thought that was just glare but I just zoomed in really tight and it’s definitely a fingerprint. Damn. Guess that didn’t come out in the pressing.

Pressing isn't magic. If there are fingerprints with ink lifting/smudging, that can't be fixed without restoring the comic with added ink.

I don't understand how that got 9.0 either. I wouldn't go above 8.0 based on what I can see.

I'd say lucky to get a 9.0 with those fingerprints

I know the fingerprint has been mentioned, but I am also curious about the non-color breaking scuffs in the black ink areas, if those would also detract. And the spine seems to be either a little dirty or a stacking color rub. I'm not real familiar with Wolvie #1 so I don't know if that's a "thing".

Sooooooo I have 9.8s with ticks and we are here talking about a finger print or color rub bringing a pressed book all the way down to a 9.0?

If there's one thing CGC graders have been consistent about, it's being brutal on fingerprints.  Only book I've ever submitted where I overlooked the fingerprint smudges came back an 8.0.  Structurally it was probably a 9.8.

I guess but fingerprints are a defect that is easily removed with a bit of warm breath and a tissue.

CGC has never been more inconsistent.

  • The laughable amount of 8.0/ 8.5/ 9.0s that look like 6.0s.
  • Books that should be a 4.5 or 5.0 that are a 3.0/3.5.
  • 9.8s with multiple spine dents.
  • 9.2s that look like 7.5s.
  • Books I've done conservation on that come back Universal with no mention of the work done. (SO many now)
  • Misplacement of books in their warehouse

The really sad part is that every single time without fail it's a new graded book, graded within the last 12-16 months.

The almost complete lack of oversight across the boards leaves the only answer that there are too many people working there now that are deficient in the skills required to do the job.

Only way to reduce turnaround time was to hire more people which means there are a bunch of new people with less experience. Hopefully they get better?
