New Arrivals [1/7/2023]

Our recent featured comic book is one that I am absolutely thrilled to share with you and consider it a privilege to offer. Marvel Mystery Comics #9 is indeed a holy grail to the majority of comic book collectors with the added benefit that it has historical significance in the context of the Marvel franchise.

This is an incredibly scarce comic book from the golden age and considered by many collectors to feature one of the greatest comic covers of all time. Currently, there are 40 universal copies reported in the CGC census. A copy of MMC #9, let alone certified graded, comes to market only once or twice a year

About its significance. This is pretty close to ground-zero for the concept of a Marvel Universe as it gets. Issue 9 is part 3 in a 4-part story arc (Human Torch gets name dropped on the last page of #7) that establishes the very first superhero shared universe. From that point forward, crossovers became more common place - all the spectacular crossovers and story tie-ins during the Silver Age up to the Marvel Cinematic Universe trace back to Marvel Mystery #7-10. DC would do the same in Winter of 1940 with All Star Comics #3 by uniting several characters to form the Justice Society of America.

And what about that cover?! In typical Alex Schomburg fashion, it is absolutely epic! Battling superheroes (first time on a cover), Sub-Mariner effortlessly crushing steel, cops rushing to the scene, a derailing train...

Incidentally, Marvel Mystery Comics #9 precedes Captain America Comics #1 by six months!

The copy for sale at Bedo's is a CGC 4.0 with cream to off-white pages. It is an exceptional copy with vibrant colors on the front cover and presents very well for its grade - no spine splits, stains, or chews.
