Your one and only favorite Silver Age Cover 2 2

What is your single favorite Silver Age cover? This can turn out to be easy for some boardies and extremely difficult for others. It may take some time to ponder about which Silver Age book has your favorite cover so don’t be hasty (I’m having a hard time trying to finalize my own favorite). You can only pick one so please do not post more than one cover. There’s no going back once you pick the cover because this is an exercise to get you to think a great deal (for those of you who are finding this exercise challenging) about which is your favorite. For purposes of this thread, the Silver Age begins with Showcase 4 and ends with the 1960s so you’re welcome to start another thread exploring whether it is or isn’t if you disagree with these parameters. Can be any Silver Age cover no matter what the genre is. Magazines like Warrens are also included.

Here is my personal favorite. Note that doesn't mean I think it's the "best" (which is ASM #33).  This is my personal favorite because it's the first Silver Age comic I bought off the rack (and still have) and I've owned this copy for 55 years. You can tell I read this comic often during a period when keeping a comic in "good shape" was not a concern of mine.  I loved the story - which this cover accurately depicts in a single image - one which I credit with my later enthusiasm for Marvel Team-Up.

Not an easy decision at all. 

The first comic that came to mind was FF49. I love the scale, SS was my favorite character growing up and Kirby was truly in his prime. 

ASM50 is another one I considered. While the comic is noteworthy for Kingpin, Romita's cover is iconic. 

I also strongly considered some of Sterenko's early Fury covers. 2 and 6 specifically. 

But I think the comic that checks all the boxes for me, is Hulk 1. It's iconic. It's significant. The cover tells a story in and of itself. It's King Kirby. 

 

Honorable mention: Avengers 57, SS 1,3 and 4, FF1 (another Kirby monster) FF12, FF13 and FF72

This was extremely difficult for me and it came down to this:

I loved 50s Sci Fi and horror and this one captures that era along with the lost world genre. The “War that Time Forgot” reminds me of “Kelly’s Heroes” meets the “Land that Time Forgot.” I also remember taking my plastic army soldiers and tanks and used them to fight the plastic dinosaurs my mom bought for me off the spinning rack in the local pharmacy. I’m so happy we didn’t have computer games and smart phones back in the early 1970s. It’s a “place and time that I will never forget…”

This was sooo hard. I narrowed it down to at least 50, but kept coming back to this one. The Anderson interiors match up to the cover.

This is a tough call for me.

I considered Detective comics #256, with the first Bat tank and the first S.A. Detective comic as well. Also up there is World of Fantasy #17, with the robot who's about to pull the lever to save the world. Also ranking high in my collection is World of Mystery #1, where a modern day Robinson Crusoe who just crawled up a cliff from a ship wreck is confronted by a giant robot. But I will have to go with a cover by Russ Heath  for Journey into Unknown Worlds #49, which hands down, at least in my collection, has the most awesome robot cover.
