Why do I feel like books like this should be worth a lot more? Even if the interior is spoon it's hard to keep a PB like this in nice condition with all the jails and Dentist Offices these things see.

It's partly because the Vintage PB hobby is so fractured. There hasn't been a price guide published in decades and information about the cover artists is spread all over the place. The Bookscans website is a great resource but unfortunately a huge missed opportunity because they have never gone to the next step of identifying art credits. I will say, in the 6 or 7 years since I've gotten back in after not collecting them since the 1980's, there has been more and more competition for nice things and the prices have been increasing. I have had conversations with quite a few collectors about how it is like collecting comic books back in the 1970's must have been. Tons of great books for less than a common high grade modern comic and so much more satisfying :cloud9:

Ok, going to get back rolling here with some great authors and GGA.

If you're collecting vintage pb's you have to collect Gold Medals. They set the standard in the early 1950's for combining original hard boiled noir with great cover art.

Gil Brewer is one of the best i've read, along with other Gold Medal regulars like Harry Whittington, Day Keene, David Goodis and John D. MacDonald, some of the most collected authors in vintage pb-land.

13 French Street by Gil Brewer, Gold Medal 211  1951  1st Edition PBO     $25

Stunning headlights cover art by Dom Lupo. Petra Lawrence is one of the wickedest women ever created imho. Brewer was a master at creating twisted, tortured people in unfortunate situations. This was such a great read as well as great to look at.

Fine/Fine Plus. Spine is square and tight, pages supple. Super glossy with great color. No creasing, just some edgewear/bindery chipping to the corners and spine tips. Lamination fully intact. A very collectible copy that can still be (carefully) read.

Gold Medal's success with original novels sent all the other publishers scurrying to commission original works for print.

The Brimstone Bed by Day Keene  Avon T-459     1st Edition PBO    1960      $45  SOLD to goldust40

Famous nude water-nymph cover art is uncredited but irresistible. I've seen it credited to the amazing George Ziel but I'm not convinced and it is not on Lynn Munroe's Ziel checklist. Spectacular job by whoever did it.

Very Fine Minus/Very Fine.Super glossy and new looking. Definitely unread. The spine has slight slant but is super sharp and unmarred. Near white pages, which is highly unusual.  A killer copy of a classic cover and great author.

The She-Wolf and Other Stories by Saki    Bantam Books #143 dust jacket over a Superior Books #M656 paperback       1945      $60

An amazing copy . Bantam and other publishers in the late 1940's realized GGA sells and replaced plain, older covers by printing dust jackets with better art, in ths case by Bert Lannon, and wrapping the old editions with the dust wrappers. It's tough to find the dust jackets in nice condition.

Fine Plus/Very Fine Minus. Super glossy and new looking  d/j. The paperback itself is Fine Plus because of a thumb bend on the front cover that doesn't break color but the wrapper is spectacular. Blinding gloss, no creases and just slightly folded at the top edge. Not frayed. A touch of tiny edgewear here and there.

Dead Yellow Women by Dashiell Hammett. Dell 308 Mapback    1949     $40

One of the most read/collected hard boiled authors with a haunting, classic cover known to all vintage PB collectors.  I previously sold a low grade copy of this one but found that I have a much better second copy so offering it here.

Very Good Plus/ Fine minus. Solid and tight, spine has slight slant. Light readers crease and some spine wear but the cover is very smooth and otherwise uncreased. A book I've never seen without some kind of reader crease. My keeper has one.

Judge Me Not by John D. MacDonald, Gold Medal 186  1951  1st Edition PBO     $25

MacDonald's 3rd novel for Gold Medal. He was probably their best selling author.  GGA cover art by Barye Phillips, their most prolific cover artist.

Fine Plus. Spine is square and tight, pages supple. Super glossy with great color. No creasing to the front cover, one small crease to the back bottom corner. Light edgewear/bindery chipping to the spine tips. Lamination fully intact. A very nice copy.
