So what's your opinion on the Magazine Market?

I have been collecting comics since 1978 and up to last week only collected Creepy back issues in the 80's. Last week I was able to pick up a run of Deadly Hands of Kung Fu 1-33, Vampiralla 1,2,6-19,31-33,37, Kull and The Barbarians 1,2, Marvel Preview 4, 11,13,14,18 Tales of the Zombie 1-10, and Doc Savage 1-8. From a local internet auction. Started reading the Zombie issues first fun stuff (Yes I plan to read them). Base on guide prices for this stuff there was not a lot of demand so I was able to buy them rather cheaply. Is the market for the b/w magazine narrow at this point? Is it starting to grow? In general what is your opinion on the market and how do you see the future of Magazine Market? I noticed there was not a lot of activity in this part of the boards lately and thought it would be a fun thread to start and read. Another thread would be what are the print runs of the magazine compared to comics in the same era?

I think there is gaining interest in the Mag market due to the fact that many (strictly) comic book only collectors are realizing that many of their favorite artists also did work on the b/w magazines. Since this was magazine format the artists and writers had no CCA restrictions which resulted in more creative freedom to produce more provocative art and grittier stories than would be found in the code hampered comic books of the time. Because of this I believe more comic book collectors (especially completists) are now seeking out these mags.

This fact combined with the larger format, usually making them harder to store and keep in nice condition make certain issues hard to find or downright rare (take the Gothic Tales of Romance books for example).

Also looking at some recent sale prices on ebay I can't help but see a gaining interest in the magazine market.

the mags are great. there is good stuff. Heavy Metal, creepy, vampirella, witches tales. Plus spectacular spiderman 1 and 2 in the late 60's. All this stuff is rockin and high grade commands a premium.

Were these collected much back in the 70's. This was the first time in my years of collecting that I found a large collection of these mags. There was another lot from ths collection which was Savage sword 2-120 sold for about a $1.00 a book. I know the LCS's don't seem to stock up on mags..

Still only 2 submissions for Nightmare 20. Is there no interest in this mag, or does noone have decent copies to submit? confused-smiley-013.gif

Maybe just no interest in Byrne? poke2.gif

That is probably the best cover but I like the layout and colors in this one. Plus it has the classic transformation scene! cloud9.gif

A lot of collectors and readers just don't get how good so many of these magazines are. People rant and rave about how good the new Conan series is, and it is very good, but the first few years of Savage Sword are great reads too and most of them are not particularly expensive.

Just finished reading Tales of the Zombie 1-10 great stuff really enjoyed the art as well. Makes me want to hunt down a piece of original art from this series. Does anyone know if the character appeared in any other books.

Started reading the Vampiralla's read #1,2,6 so far not really into them that much hopefully the stories improved as series went on. I will probably dump these eventually. The Tales of the Zombie are definitely keepers so far. cloud9.gif

Based on activity on the magazine portion of the boards I can see why I paid only $2.00 a book for these. Magazines are definitely overlooked in the comic community and still have a rather narrow following it seems. confused-smiley-013.gif

The series starts getting better with issue #12 (1st Jose Gonzalez art, 1st Sanjulian cover, stories get less campy). The stories featuring Vampirella were never great, but some of the artwork is stunning. There were certainly some non-Vampirella stories in the series with superb writing, though.

Gotta agree there! The first 10 issues or so were very campy and for laughs.

I believe the comic industry, and Jim Warren, were afraid the government were going to clamp done on them, like what happened to EC. That's why the cover to Creepy 1 was a cartoon. Man, has times changed.

I am quite intrigued by many of the 70's and 80's mags and would like to start buying. Lack of knowledge and the fear of overpaying for a mags that are for all purposes "warehouse finds" (i.e., Koch or somebody has an infinite supply of them) is what deters me.

Lists of the abundant versus scarcer titles/issues would help a lot.
