New Art Day on the New Year - Ironwolf by Howard Victor Chaykin

I first encountered Howard's work in the 70s with Ironwolf being the story that most captured by my imagination. I followed through Cody Starbuck, Scorpion, Dominic Fortune, and eventually American Flagg! which was interrupted by my roughly 10 year hiatus.Despite the time, Ironwolf has stuck with me and Howard kindly agreed to provide a "cover" for the series.I've never seen pages from the original series in the open market. Still this image scratches a long standing itch. Thanks for the painless transaction, Howard, and the wonderful image.

To my eye, mostly pen and not fading. Nonetheless, very expensive!

Understood but sometimes a page just speaks to you and money doesn't matter... such is the madness of art

I should add it comes from a wonderful Black Mirror-style story in which the pilot is an analog of Amelia Earhart

Cool!

Don't recall ever seeing a Bagley prelim.

Ya Bagley rep Spencer beck back in September was selling about 8 prelims from issue 1 & 2 for the new Spider-Man title. I was shooting for issue one but didn't nab one I wanted so I took this one. Also piece is only like 5x8 size.

New Art Day - Superman Strip 1291 by Shuster and Boring

I bought this strip because:

  1. I loved the image of Superman (Note he's swimming. Superman was not a distance flyer in 1943)
  2. The N**i aircraft
  3. The signature
  4. The hope that Joe actually worked on it.

I want to thank Ike Wilson, Mitch Itkowitz, and Bruce Haley for the information on the piece that helped me understand its origin.

Many, many comics died to pay for this purchase. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do. Click image to get a bigger one.

A couple neat pieces this week:

I've wanted a Roger Cruz piece, but I don't think I'm in the realm of getting an X page, so I went for this from Darkness Infinity #1 in 1999:

Two neat Guy Dorian pieces, one is from a Hari Kari promotional postcard from 1995:

And a pretty neat vertical DPS from a comic called "Hakkiro Soul Quest" from 1998. The lettering is pasted on, but was cut out with an X-acto knife and pasted to the board - the intricacy of the parchment paper and word balloon cutouts is impressive.

I tend to stay away from modern comic pages but I do make some exceptions for certain covers and…for Marvel zombies!  I just got in 2007 Black Panther # 30 Page 11 by Francis Portela:

That is a great Zombie page, and with Zombie Wolverine in it, too!

Thanks, Dr. B!  The funny thing about this page is that zombie Iron Man is absent from the main top panel group shot but then suddenly appears in the bottom panel.  Upon close inspection of the artwork, there is some blue pencil work to the left of Zombie Giant-Man to indicate that Francis Portela intended to include him in that space but never completed it for whatever reason.  It’s a bit of a shame for what could have been.

But, I did receive another piece of comic art today!  This time it is IDW’s 2010 G.I. Joe # 15 Cover A by David Williams:

I'm not familiar with a lot of newer Joe covers, but that one is definitely a favorite. For lack of a better description, it strikes me as a very "Tarantino" type of cover.

Unpacked this gem last night. I was super excited to finally add a vintage JSC published piece from 1994. It's a little over 10" square - so smaller than a full page, but the scan doesn't do JSC's precision inks justice - especially at a slightly smaller scale. It is really something to see up close.

Congrats! It looks amazing :headbang:

You mentioned JSC's inking though, it seems like Al Vey was the inker based on his signature here. Or was it split like JSC pencilled and inked Angela and Al Vey pencilled and inked Spawn?
