Dell was one of the publishers going strong well before Action #1 and deserves a thread here, I think.  Here's my oldest Dell comic, and in fact my oldest standard comic format comic period (I've got a couple of the square strip collections.)

Popular Comics #6, July 1936, first appearance of Sheldon Mayer's legendary Scribbly strip.  Who I think may be the earliest character created for the comic books get their own ongoing title, he had a 15 issue run at DC in the late 40's- early 50's.
