Batman 614 - Spolier Warning! Avoid this thread!

Okay, so who else thought that 614 was a bit mediocre. Couple of things:

- did anyone really think that Batman would kill the Joker? Think about the merchandising / publishing future that would be lost! Furthermore, considering this unrealistic assumption, I think it was handled rather poorly with Jim being the one to call it quits to the Batman. I w ould have liked something more along the lines of an inner realization. Instead, the only inner realization we get is that the Joker might some day kill Catwoman? Okay . . .

- did anyone else finish this comic book in under 3 minutes? I know for a fact I spent more time and energy getting this copy than it took me time to read it.

- is anyone else just not that impressed with Jim Lee's Joker? It's just not doing it for me . . .

Unfortunately thats been the case with the whole run. I only purchased #608, the rest I have read off the shelf in the comic shop, takes about the same amount of time read as it would to flip through. grin.gif

For me Jim Lee has been doing some great work on the run (haven't seen #614 yet), but Loeb has been lightweight at best.

Agreed. I did the same as you Blowout (bought only #608). I read #614 at the store yesterday. Lee's work has been dynamic! I thoughhis Joker looked alot like the Joker in "Arkham Asylum" with those wild eyes.

However, haven't been impressed enough with the story to buy the title. Seems like they are going with the formula of dragging out Batman's "rogue's gallery" so that everyone can see Lee's versions. Killer Croc, Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Herky Quinn, Joker, and now, presumably, Two-Face? Now all we need is the Riddler and the Penguin! It's borderline gimmick.

Just checked out #614 and it has confirmed all my fears. This book has turned into nothing but a Jim Lee showcase/portfolio (not a bad thing if billed as such).

In this issue we have flashbacks in what looks like Watercolor, B/W line art, and various other art styles as well as the regular panels.

The story is completely secondary and virtualy non-existent.

Right, there's nothing wrong with setting out to do a blatantly commercial run-- I'm thinking about the decision to have the classic movie-monster-of-the-month in the original Swamp Thing, or the Englehart/Rogers/Austin Detective run's revisiting the classic Bat-villains. It's what the creators did with the opportunity that made those runs classics.

In my view, Jim Lee is delivering, but I've lost interest in Jeph Loeb's 'bad tomato surprise' approach to writing Batman whodunits. In the Long Halloween, the revelation of the villain was such a bad tomato surprise (pulled out of left field simply to pull a surprise on the reader). Similarly, the introduction (and quick dispatch) of Bruce Wayne's childhood friend simply as indirection for the identify of the mystery villain feels like a cheat on the reader. Any bets on whether the bandaged bad guy is really who we are led to believe he is at the end of #614? You can do a whodunit that surprises and delights the reader, or you can just pull things out of left field for the sake of the surprise. Loeb seems to always do the latter, and it gets old.

I also don't like the borderline-psychotic approach Loeb takes in defining the Batman: first the "I'm not a nice person" from the previous issue, and now the watch-me-kill-the-Joker berserker rage.

Bah. Humbug.

I thought the same. Could easily be a "cleverly" designed "trick". Even though I mentioned Two-Face earlier (as we are led to believe), I had this very discussion with one of the guys at my shop yesterday.

Personally, I like Loeb's writing in Spider-Man: Blue much better.

Jason Todd Back From the dead,

Or a clone of Batmans friend who has come to reclaim his spot as the original and prove the other man is a clone.

I finally got Batman 614 yesterday. I didn't read it in under 3 minutes because I stopped about four pages in to pull Batman 613 trying to figure out if I missed an issue. Loeb omitted a chunk of story between the last panel of 613 and the first panel of 614 tha threw me for a loop.

That said, the book was a fast read. I did enjoy the different art styles. However, I'm glad to see some Hush-haters speaking out. I can't wait until this "story" ends and we can get to some real stories. Hush is boring, dull, and drawn-out. Thank god we're getting a new Batman Adventures.

I really enjoy the Jim Lee artwork during this run... but the story is not one of Jeph Loeb's better efforts... It's boring. This is surprising, because I really thought the Long Halloween and Dark Victory were very good Batman stories. Loeb has churned out some really good books (daredevil Yellow and Superman For all Seasons) but his stint on monthly books has been a disappointment.

I like Hush

But WHY do you like it? confused.gif

The art is great but the story.............What appeals to you about the story?

admittedly i dont think the story of batman 608-614 is great, but surely it continues in the next issue? gotta wait and see i guess. or am i wrong> did it finish there and then? cos if so i gotta few choice words that may have to be censored by big bother.

the artwork was great in 608 and that's why i continued to by the run, jim lee does have a talent. i didnt buy it for the writer though as i thought his daredevil yellow series wasnt amazing.
