What do you consider High Grade

42 posts in this topic

Does what you consider High Grade depend on the age (era) of comics

I mean an 8.0 for an eary Action, All-Star, etc I would consider high grade

However, I could not consider it High grade for a Modern or even bronze age issue

I am just trying to get a feel what others consider to be high grade in each era of comics

Yes.

For me:

GA high grade is 7.0 and above.

SA high grade is 8.5 and above.

BA high grade is 9.2 and above.

CA and modern high grade is 9.6 and above.

I am sure others will now chime in to completely disagree though. tongue.gif

GA (pre- 1945) - 6.0

Some books can't be found in fine. The highest graded unrestored Action 7 (second supes cover) is 4.5.

Atomic/early SA (1946 - through the early major SA keys: FF 1, AF 15 etc...) 7.0

Rest of the SA - 8.0

BA - 9.0

Copper-modern 9.4

Regardless of age, high grade for me is 9.4 or better.

Thats what I was talking about

Everyone has a differnce of opinions, but I could never say a 9.0 or 9.2 key issue silver or gold was not high grade

There may be higher grades, bu a 9.2 showcase 4 or 9.0 action 7 are high grades to me

Okay, here goes, I am prepared for the SA Marvel Heads to chew me a new one(kinda like the rabid gerbils they are...just kidding!!!!)

GA: 8.0 Up

SA: 9.2(Marvel 9.4 yay.gif) Up

BA: 9.4 Up

MA: 9.4 Up

Yeah, I pretty much lump in SA Marvel with all BA and MA. That's because Marvel gets a bump because of all the cruddy QP that shows up on them.

So you wouldn't consider a 9.2 Action #1 high grade? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

There's always exceptions based on scarcity and rarity, but that's what's HG to me in terms of what goes into my collection. My filter is what I can put into my collection; I'm not a big roller so Action #1 and other 100g books don't make it into my thought process.

BTW, I have tons of VG GA books in my collection, and they aren't high grade. I still like collecting them though, although low grade copies are always first on the chop block.

Just in thinking a little more about it while writting and reading this post

I am closer to your numbers October

except I would probably bump the ba to 9.2..but a 9.0 nice HoS or HoM is more then good enough for me

In most cases :

PA high grade for me is 6.0 and above

GA high grade for me is 8.5 and above.

SA high grade for me is 9.4 and above.

BA high grade for me is 9.6 and above.

MA high grade for me is 9.8 and above.

I am not as strict as a lot of people around here, so I doubt many people will agree with me, especially on the bronze range.

That's what's great about collecting...it's up to the individual...and if that works for you then more power to ya!

I totally agree, I never understood grading on a curve for the Era. To each his own I suppose, but isnt HG , HG no matter the era? Call a spade a spade. If a GA book is a 7.0.. it is mid grade, plain and simple. It might be the highest graded to date, but it is not HG.

If it means there are not as many HG GA books, ..so be it.

I say minimum HG is 9.4, regardless of era.

Well, except for moderns confused-smiley-013.gif

Ok and each person has there own ideas/beliefs

but if a 9.4 or better is high grade and nothing else, then there are going to be issues in Plat. and Gold era that have NO High Grades

--- How many 9.4 Detective 1-26's are there if any

I am not up on the census of each book so maybe there is at least 1 of each

I try not to grade on curve for each era, but that doesnt mean I dont thihnk an 7.5 GA is not high grade

---HOWEVR< as already stated a couple of times, each person has his own opinion

I understand ya, but to me.. if there are NO 9.4 Plat books, then there are simply no HG Plat books. The best of the bunch might be really nice, but "really nice" does not a HG make. Dealers might have a different take on that, but to me it is black and white.

No offense meant either way..just my take.
