Nic Cage Heritage Auction - initial thoughts?

Anyone have initial thoughts on the prices realized on the Nic Cage auction? The top price was $126k for the All-Star #3, $120k on the Detective #38, $86 on Action #1.

All the realized prices are already listed in the completed auctin section of the web site.

I got to spend some time at the auction and it was pretty intense to see these guys tossing tens of thousands of dollars around. Aside from the usual heavy weights in the comic kingdom attending, there was an unassuming, forty-something woman sitting way in back.

She had her face buried in her catalogue well before the auction began, studying the lots. When # 5109 popped up, Blackhawk Knight # 139, she bid aggressivley. It topped out at 160 dollars (without the surcharge) and it was obvious that was a huge chunk of change for her.

I come to find out she has no interest at all in comic collecting. She's a college English professor who met Nicolas Cage a couple months ago. He listened to her opinions about movies, treated her (a "nobody" in her words) with respect, and she bought it as a "connection" to him. I thought that was pretty cool.

While a lot of books probably didn't go for "extreme" prices most if not all I saw hit their estimate. I lost a bit of interest when they went through all those Adventure books..but didn't really spend a whole lot of time looking around as I didn't really want to wander around the area just yet.

Not following the Nic Cage bks at all. Tracking the orig comic art at Heritage. Every lot I was interested in has already hit the low estimate or MORE w/ 2 days to go. Mkt seems very strong this weekend in Dallas.

"That is pretty cool. Or pretty stalker. Not sure which. "

.....hmmm, she could have just bid on one of his beat up hero for hire's......... grin.gif

The only two I bid on where the high grade Adventures and they sold for less than the expected, but still far more than I was willing to go on them.

They were extremely nice comics though!

they were sold as a lot and went for 1,150 (almost ten times guide)

that blackhawk she won sold for 8 times guide in like GD+ or VG.

Other than that, aside from the relatively flat showing of the super-high end books, there were plenty of "whoahs" to go around. These are a few I caught- i'll post more later once I have chance to go through the adventures and marvel mysteries.

catman 16 (vg+) went for $2500, which is 12.5 times guide.

catman 15 (vf/nm) went for 11 times guide.

Planet Comics 1 NM 9.4 went for almost three times guide (36k)

his silver Green Lantern 1 (vf/nm) sold for almost 9 thousand (metropolis had the high CGC copy- a 9.2- listed for 8,000.) that's over twice 9.4 guide.

I got my two books. Hulk 182 (yes I paid three times guide for a VF 8.0) and Avengers 9 (app vf- I paid about half apparent guide.)

murph0, by the way, his ASM 1 did not sell. It can be yours for $12,650.00.

that was one of about 18 lots that didn't meet reserve. The two biggies from that are the Captain America 1 (available for $80,500.00 ) and the Adventure 40($86,250.00)

I've been comparing the close up scans of grading on the Nick Cage books & I am appauled, especially when compared to some of my recently harsh grading from CGC. I'd love to post some high res scans of my early silvers that received no better than an 8.0 (if I could figure out how to do it here). Guess the census if filled up with all it's NM's on these books for this year? mad.gif

What was up with the mid-grade Luke Cage collection going for $1000? I thought it was a mistake since those books are worth maybe $40.00. you don't even get the fancy CGC holder that say from the collection of Nicolas Cage on it.

That was freaky and did you notice that quote that these comics "MAY be the actual ones Nic bought off the newstand"

WTF is up with that? Did Heritage just go raid Chuck's Hero for Hire mid-grades and list them as Cage's?

While the auction is not yet over, I'm pretty happy so far - I picked up a key, early silver age book with WHITE pages and no Marvel Chipping for guide (Fn). No CGC-premium (which doesn't really show up on low-mid grade books anyway), and no Nick-premium (which I am not willing to pay, but after-the-fact I think it's kind of neat that I'll have one of his books). More to come?!?!

I watched the ASM 1 go by..I'm actually talking to someone about buying a 9.0 instead for not much more.

She was definitely a HUGE fan. She was carefully carrying a manila envelope with her, I think she brought it to show the crew from Heritage. It was a press kit from his movie Wind Talkers. She also had a well protected legal envelope in the kit...in it were two pics of her and Mr. Cage (he had his arm around her in one of them, she was VERY proud of that one). She didn't come across as a stalker, more like your mild mannered English teacher who had a brush with fame and was still on cloud nine. It was funny, when she talked about Cage she would get flushed and nervous, like she was a kid. Her husband must regret taking her to meet him!

Another interesting thing about the auction was in regards to the "raw" lots with multiple issues. Apparently the winners could get them CGC'd, but ALL issues had to be sent in for grading, not just a select few. If the winner wanted them slabbed they couldn't take possesion of the issues after paying, they had to go directly to CGC to make sure there were no switches made.

That means the winner of the Luke Cage group would have to send in dozens of issues from the lot if they wanted the number one copy CGC'd.

I am glad Heritage has set up a separate But it Now price list for initially unsold Nic, Mile Highs, Rockfords & other gold/silver bks on their website. Buy prices listed include the 15% juice for Heritage. blush.gif
