......but you can see right through the cover..........

I think thats a misnomer. What you are actually seeing is the black ink from the words and images on the inside front cover. wink.gif

Do any of you remember the market geniuses that proclaimed this buy at $2K

as a "sound investment" which had a "guaranteed return"?

But CI, I hear that ol' Sabes is going to have an even bigger role in the X-Men

sequel...better buy this book before it rockets to $5K by the end of next year.

Yeah, riiiiiiiighhhht...

Not on this board. This was listed 2 weeks after San Diego with an opening bid of $2200 or so and a BIN of $2600 (I believe). It was met with ridicule.

greggy, what did the buyer pay for the book in S.D.? $1800, right?

.......looks like he's taking a bath on that one................ grin.gif

He bought it with a bunch of other books and paid over $2,000 for everything. The seller then told me later that he put a price on $1,800 for that book! frown.gif

Actually multiple people thought it was a decent purchase the time someone used a BIN on one for 2,400 about 3 months ago.

I agree with you for the major books and obvious collectibles (number #'1's, Number 100's, and the like) but I find it hard to believe anyone would have bought cases of Iron Fist 14, the second to last issue of a very low-selling bi-monthly title. At the time, the fact that sabretooth was in it was meaningless. Cases of Iron Fist 1, maybe. 14, I doubt it.

Whether people bought cases or not, which was a somewhat common practice for some dealers and retailers back in those days, isn't the real point..the point is there's just a lot of this book out there.. If you look on the census there's a TON of these books graded, and that's probably (we'll go high since this book was a prime CGC candidate for a while) 40 percent of the total #'s out there of this particular book.

That Iron Fist was a "low-selling" series is an urban myth and I know for a fact, that many dealers were hoarding each and every Byrne comic from this era (yes Virginia, he was hot before X-Men) and was one of the driving forces behind the Direct Market.

Hell, if X-Men Byrne issues only went newstand (and out the back door of distributors), the series might have been cancelled along with Iron Fist and Champions (two highly spec'd Byrne runs).

Don't underestimate the degree of hoarding. Back in the mid-70's, it was not uncommon for minor players and collectors to buy 2 of every single issue, all cherry picked off of the racks. I grew up in the suburbs of NYC and even as a dopey kid I knew people who bought 2-4 issues of EVERY book they could, and even one or two that would buy cases of every issue that they thought would become a key, especially #1's. It is not at all far fetched to expect that some people would have picked up cases of even regular issues. And, believe it or not, Byrne was already starting to have quite the fan base by IF 14, thus making the possibility of cases off the book put away very real.

Very possible I suppose. Wish i was smart enough to hoard back then. Lucky me, I have multiple cherry copies of Redfox, The Realm and West Coast Avengers 1. Oh, and the Jack Of Hearts mini-series. I'm still waiting for that character to explode.

I've said this before (in one of the first threads, i believe), I can't believe the prices this book continues to fetch. Does anybody think that Sabretooth is a great villian? I don't. Yeah, he's Wolvie's arch-enemy, but is he really an interesting character? He has (roughly) the same 'powers' as Wolverine with a little more strength. He is not is the class of villians as Dr. Doom or Spidey's rogues. And, as far as his appearance in the X-Men movie and sequel goes, it sucked! He was nothing more than a mindless thug of Magneto's. Lame Villian. Overvalued book.

You speaketh the truth...when the Bronze Bubble Boys stop collecting/retire/die out no one will give a rat's about this character.

Hey, I have heard from reliable sources that my 1,300 sets of "Team America" (the FULL RUN, baby!) are going to go through the roof once Marvel goes through with the "Ultimate Team America" series! MARAUDER RULES!
