BATMAN #608-WHAT DID U THINK?

I really enjoyed the book. This is from someone who has not picked up a new issue for nearly 7 years. I have read a few HCs of Jeph Loeb (Long Halloween & Dark Victory) and was thoroughly pleased. Jim Lee is of course Jim Lee. The art was very good and the story looks to be promising. Any opinions? Did not want to give away anything for those who have not read it........ smirk.gif

I liked it so much that I bought 5 copies. My only gripe was that it left me wanting

more, More, MORE, now, Now, NOW!!!

yeah reading the HCs of the Loeb stories is great. But in order to that this time, we have to wait at least 18 months. Now we have to hold off for 30 days. Hopefully it will be worth it (unlike DK2). mad.gif

I thought it was a great book! Stuff like that is why I started collecting comics in the first place!

........must say not impressed, came off too much like a series of jim lee splash pages (art was nice though) ........story was virtually non-existant, i prefer that my comic books take me longer than five minutes to read............. frown.gif

Two thumbs up. I'm not really a Bat's fan, I like the Fugitive storyline but that's about it. I read the Jeph and Jim version and am totally hooked.

Keep it coming.

*****SPOILER WARNING******

I thought the book was average. Lee's art was cluttered in places, especially the mish-mash of detail and monotone color on pages 2 and 3. Loeb's dialogue was, at times, stilted and choppy.

And, as blowout noted, there was little substance to the story. Batman frees kidnapped child from Killer Croc, Catwoman arrives on scene and steals ransom money, Batman gives chase, but loses Catwoman on her way back to a rendezvous with Poison Ivy. Try summarizing a 100 Bullets story like that....

Making a comparison between Batman and 100 Bullets is insane... One is a comic book, the other is illustrated literature...

And don't get me wrong, I sell about equal copies of both in my shop, but I am so much happier when a customer adds 100 Bullets to their pull, because in its 3+ years of publication I have NEVER had a customer drop it from their list. The same is true for Strangers in Paradise and Waiting Place among others. But I never hear the familar customer refrain "Yeah, I just don't like the new (writer/artist/direction/storyline) as much." If I recommend 100 Bullets, and they like the first issue they read, they're hooked. I recommend Wolverine, and Marvel will change the artist and writer 8 times in the next year.

BTW, anyone who hates Wolverine should pick up tomorrow's issue of Punisher... I thought the midget Spider Jerusalem and midget John Constantine were bad in Punisher's last issue... You won't believe what Garth Ennis has in store for the Canucklehead tomorrow...

Ahhh Lighthouse! One of the few and far between to praise Bullets! In previous posts, I've written that Bullets is the best book out there! You are correct, read it and you will be hooked! I started it late, so now I just wait for the TPB's. It really is, as you said, 'illustrated literature'. It just gets better with every issue! I think Azzerello is a genius! Even the stories that you think are just 'filler issues' always come back into his grand scheme of things. Also, that he and Risso have stayed the whole time (and I believe are set to do them all) is a testament to how good this book is! The art and stories compliment one another so well. I would love to see it as a series if it were done just right (but, TV always screws it up, so hopefully it'll stay in its current form only). Everyone should Buy This Book!!!!!

I've been wondering about Strangers in Paridise....I'll pick it up on your recommendation.

Whatever you do, don't try to read SIP from the current issue... If ever a book demanded to be read in order, it's SIP...

All eleven trades are available from both Diamond and Cold Cut, so any store should be able to supply you with them. I always keep at least four copies of the 1st trade in stock and two or more of the rest, so if your store is unwilling to fulfill your order, drop me a PM and I'll sell you one at 20% off cover plus shipping.

The 1st Strangers in Paradise TPB is on my rack of 'Guaranteed" trades (along with 35 others including Watchmen, SW: Crimson Empire, and Patrick the Wolf Boy). Any customer that doesn't like it is welcome to bring it back for a full refund. I've sold over 100 of them in the last two years and had a grand total of 2 people bring them back.

People who think comics are dead as a medium just aren't shopping in the right stores. There's a greater variety of genres available right now than at any time since the 1950's. Horror, Science Fiction, Crime, Romance, Fantasy, Superhero, Samurai, Conspiracy, Funny Animal, TV, Humor, Erotica, virtually every genre except Western is on the rack every single month... It's a heckuva time to be reading comics!

Don't worry...I hardly ever jump into a series (only one I can think of is I started Hellblazer w/ Ennis's run)....I know my shop carries SIP....I've seen it on the recommended reading rack. If they don't have the first trade, I will order from you. Thanks!

Making a comparison between Batman and 100 Bullets is insane

Not if the point is that the Batman 608 story was cursory compared to a 100 Bullets issue. I assume you were able to infer that from my post. grin.gif

The point being that Batman 608, when compared to some of the superior runs today, left much to be desired.

I actually liked #608... mainly because Batman reminded me of the JLA-Batman, rather than the meek and mild character he usually is in his own titles. And I tend to like Jeph Loeb's storytelling. But I think anyone suggesting Jim Lee will vault Batman into the top 5 on a monthly basis is naive. #608 was the top seller this month to fulfill some curiosity. By run's end, it will be back around #25 where it always is.

On a side note, DC is offering retailers a healthy additional discount on #611 if their orders match #608. Marvel and DC use this tactic primarily on overlooked new books (like Call of Duty #1), on books they feel the fan-base hasn't located yet (like Ultimate Spider-Man #3), and on books they think are dying (like Elektra #11). We can safely say the experiment worked with USM 3, I am not so sure about Batman 611. The orders for #608 were themselves boosted by additional discounts (I got mine at 58% off) so I question the success of additional discounts on Lee's 4th issue.

We'll see... It's a shame it's not a Marvel book, so we'd have a potential upside through CGC if the book does well...

I'll stick with Batman for at least 4-6 issues, as it often takes that long for the story and creative team to cement themselves.

And, although we disagree slightly on the quality of Batman 608, I completely agree with you about the quality of current books on the rack. I've never looked forward to so many different books each month.

As far as 100 Bullets goes, I think I agree that it is the best ongoing series right now.

The only thing I didn't like about it was the new look of KILLER CROC. Resembled Spideys villain LIZARD or ALIEN. Maybe I missed some issue were he changed to this or was this the first time he was drawn to look like this alien looking monster. Other then that, I thought it was good.

I would agree with that Killer Croc assessment. What is it with this trend of making heroes & villains take on more animal characteristics? In a similar vein, the new look for Beast of the X-Men is deplorable.
